"Melody.....Melody...."I hear my name slowly fade as my eyes slowly flutter open and feel the slight pain of brightness overwhelm them.
"Melody! Bloody hell you've slept in again!"
I feel my mum continuously shaking me to have me wake up. Realization hits me as I remember that today is Sunday, chore day. Out of the whole family, I'm the one who has to do the most. But that's how it's always been, so in a way, I'm used to it.
"Well, come on then! Breakfast isn't going to make itself!" She announces and slams the door causing the pictures on my wall to shake.
I take a deep sigh and slowly climb out of my bunk bed that I share with my sister. I then quickly used the bathroom and take a glance at my unkempt brown hair. Groaning, I comb through my lose wavy curls until it's looks pretty decent, and make my way downstairs.
"Hurry up Melody, we're starving!!" My brother Jack yells as I reach the last step.
"Alright, alright!" I say under my breath and enter the kitchen.
Quickly getting out supplies, I prepare the stove for eggs and pop some bread in the toaster. While having those cook, I pull out some plates and forks then pull out some glasses and fill them with orange juice.
"Melody, here's your list for today. When you're done with those I presume it will be pretty close to bed time so you can run a bath and go to bed." I skim through the list seeing the pretty normal things, then there were some new ones but expected.
"Now hurry up, the eggs are burning!" She exclaims and goes to get the others.
I quickly fill all the plates with eggs and toast and place them on the table. Just then, the boys run in and practically hop in their seats. Then mum and my little sister join with them and find their seats as well.
"Did dad already go to work?" My other brother Toby asks. She gracefully nods and starts eating. The boys dig in and I shyly eat mine as well.
"So boys, I was thinking maybe after your chores, you like to come to the park with you sister."
She gleams at them knowing the answer. Both of them nod like monkeys and continue to shove all their food in their mouths. When we all finish eating, I swiftly take all the plates and place them in the sink for cleaning.
"Melody, just because we're gone doesn't mean you can slack off. Do you understand, I expect most of the chores done." She states firmly.
"Yes, mother." I reply and continue washing the dishes.
As I hear her footsteps leave the room, I take a deep breath and allow a tear to stream down my cheek. Just one tear with no feeling to it, just one tear that needed to be free.
