age 5
Luke stepped into his kindergarten class, and immediately kids started laughing.
He didn't know what was so funny, so he looked around, but couldn't see anything.
He looked up and saw Michael looking at him, but he wasn't laughing.
"He's wearing a dress!" Someone shouted and Luke looked down at his grey dress and pink converse.
"Mama?" He asked, and looked up.
"Yeah, sweetie?" She asked, kneeling down to his level.
"Are they laughing at me?" Luke asked, not really understanding.
"That doesn't matter. You look absolutely beautiful, and you have to remember that." She said, and Luke nodded as she pulled out a pink sharpie and a note pad.
She wrote something and folded the paper up, sticking it in his dress pocket.
"Keep that with you." She said, and he hugged her tightly. "Have a good first day." She said, and he smiled, nodding.
He watched as she walked out of the class room, and he turned to see his whole class staring at him. All the teachers and some parents that were still there looked at him sympathetically.
He walked over to a table to sit beside Michael, but once he got there, everyone got up and left to go do something else.
"Boys don't wear dresses. That's ugly." Someone said, but Luke just started coloring, not letting that diminish his confidence in himself.
He pulled out the note his mom left him and smiled as he read it.
'Pretty'
She knows Luke can't read but he knows what that says
