Alec and Adelaide spent the best part of an hour trawling the streets of New York, essentially looking for a needle in a stack of needles. just as they were about to give up and head back to the institute for back-up, a familiar ring came from behind them, Adelaide turned round and instantly smiled, pulling Alec with her, as soon as his eyes landed on the runaway, he visibly calmed, knowing he hadn't lost her in the streets.

"Why'd you run out?   And what's the point  of an Invisibility rune   if you don't silence your phone?   That was childish,  sneaking out like that." Alec rambled sounding like an overprotective father. Adelaide smirked and Clary rolled her eyes as she picked up the phone.

"Simon. Hey." Adelaide smiled knowing that Simon was still okay, she hadn't seen or heard from him in days and she was beginning to worry. Sadly she could only hear one side of the conversation but she heard Clary tell Simon where they were.

"I'm at the Brooklyn Academy." After that, Clary hung up and looked at the two people in front of her smiling.

"That's it, we have to go. Right now." Alec's authoritative tone was back as he attempted to grab Clary's arm and guide her away from the Academy, Clary pulled her arm away from Alec and glared at him.

"No, I'm on my way to the loft, there's something there that I  think could help me find my mother." Adelaide's eyebrows pulled together as she frowned.

"Clary, are you crazy?   That's way too dangerous." Adelaide stepped forward and grabbed Clary's shoulders so she'd look her in the eyes, she couldn't be serious, it was death mission part-two. Clary clearly didn't want anything to happen to her mother, but her mother wouldn't want anything to happen to her.

Valentine probably has men watching that place around the clock, just in hopes that you will go back and then take you! Clary, as much as I'd love you away from the institute and out of my life, I would prefer it if you were alive and away from Valentine."

Clary pulled out her phone to text Simon, Adelaide caught a glimpse of the text before she shoved her phone back in her pocket and ran off

'Meet me at the old shortcut. You know the one.'

"Mundanes. Look at them all, running around like ants." Alec's tone was bitter and he looked at the humans going about their everyday life, completely unaware of what was happening.

"Why do you always look so miserable?" Adelaide asked smiling at Alec who had a frown deeply set on his forehead.

"I don't."

"Yes you do. I don't think I've ever seen you really smile." Alec rolled his eyes at Adelaide as they went off, following Clary through the crowded streets towards her old house.

"Okay, my mom's loft is just across the alley."

"All right, well, we have to be careful, there are eyes all over this place   and everybody in the Shadow  World's looking for you, both of you." Alec looked between the red-heads as he placed a hand on the small of Adelaide's back, guiding her forward to make sure she was in front of him, just so he could know she was okay.

"I guarantee you,  no one's gonna find this shortcut, I used to take it back in  middle school to see Clary and Adelaide. You might know the Shadow World,  but trust me   I know Brooklyn." Simon looked smug to know that for the first time since he met the dark, brooding shadowhunter, she finally had the upper hand and was good at something he wasn't.

"Come on." Simon sprung over the wall and jumped up the fire escape to reach the door that opens to the back of the loft, Alec and Adelaide looked at each other with perplexed looks as they caught up, Alec pulled Adelaide up to the door as it was a height from the end on the ladder to the door, she smiled at him and faced Simon.
