"Rubbish" I scoffed and stared ahead, still clutching Greg's key. Numb to the icy chill that gripped my body and refused to release me. Numb to the obvious atmosphere. Numb to the possible next scene I'm about to witness. I feel nothing but terrible, stupid fear.
"Diana."
Hearing him speak my name like that in a soft whisper, in an impatient groan makes me want to cry. "If this is about your father-"
"Dad has nothing to do with this!" Panic hardened in my veins and tears started to prickle in the corners of my eyes. Seemingly, vague images appeared in my mind again. Images I wanted to forget. Images that used to haunt me. Bullshit. "Uncle Simon, I can't leave. Not now."
"Your mother is worried."
"Nothing bad will happen to me. That was seven years ago," I stopped and let out a shaky breath. "seven from what I remembered. Walk around and chat people, I bet half of them actually remembers what happened."
It took me real big deal to talk about the incident that way. I'm normally defensive and easily angered when it comes to my dad. "See? This is why I accepted your offer in the first place! Mom led me up believing I should be scared. She's gone mad, Uncle. Mom is crazy."
"Diana, she's only worried about you. And she has every right to be scared." Instantly, as if something just slipped his mouth, he pulled back from speaking. "The murderer is still in shadows, who knows-"
"Can you just stop? Just stop leading me on! All of you." I dropped Greg's car key on his table hastily and spun around making my way out of his dominion. My heart felt broken in two raising my voice at him like that and my heart felt broken for talking about mom the way I did.
But I couldn't leave, not now at least. It took everything in me to leave the past, leave the defeaning past that used to cut deep my chest every time. It took everything in me to leave my mom, to forget every memory because it's all for the better.
Now, I have the chance. I have the chance to start over. Now, I have found escape. It's all I've ever wanted. A place where I could think, where I could rethink my choices to know what really matters. A time to forget, to heal. And I'm beginning to feel the real Diana. I can't drop these all now.
What my mother don't understand is, not everyone I meet is gonna hurt me. This world may be full of dangerous people but that's what life is about. You've got to deal with it, you've got to fight. She's scared of losing me just like how she lost Dad. But she is not going to lose me because I will never be my father, never repeat his mistakes.
I momentarily halted to catch my breath. I was fumming. My shared-room came to view. A sudden flow of calmness vibrated through my body. I searched for the might to walk and sighed one last time before I entered.
"You look.." Harry's groggy voice filled my ears, "exhausted. Have you been crying?"
Only then I have realized, my eyes, my cheeks, they're wet. I leaned back on the gray comforting seat and stared blankly at the table.
"Here," Harry approached with a bottle of water on his hand and his hanky on the other. "Don't have to speak at all, I don't mind."
I would've argued but having Harry —this beautiful Harry be all nice on me, comforted me a bit. "Thank you, Harold."
I never heard another word for the next ten minutes. Not until my funny, stupid-looking stomach broke the silence. oh my god.
Harry threw me shots of laughter, thought I was being funny. He stopped the moment I cursed. And went on laughing again.
"Don't you get the idea, Harold?" I raised a brow and threw him a tissue roll.
He raised his arms up in the air for defense. "Look, how about McDonalds?"
At the mention of french fries, burgers and floats, I froze on my seat. But I was pissed at him. I rolled him my eyes and nibbled my lower lip.
"Alright then, I'm just gonna drive all by myself and eat all by myself and maybe—"
"Wait." I spoke as he was about to exit the room. "I'm in."
