That night when my dad was knocked out on the couch from being drunk, I grabbed my duffel bag from the hall closet. I tip-toed up the stairs to my room, and opened my dresser. I threw in 4 pairs of Jeans, 5 t-shirts, underwear, 7 pairs of socks and a bra. Once I got my clothes together, I threw in my phone charger, my laptop, my hair brush and my MP3 player. I grabbed the teddy bear my mom gave to me for my 8th birthday, hugged it and gently placed it into my duffel. I looked around for anything else important. Nothing. My dad took away all pictures of mom when she died. He said they have to die with her, though I don't know what that meant. I turned of my light, tip- back down the stairs, slipped my shoes on and went into the kitchen to write a note.

Dad, By the time you read this I will be gone, don't worry, I'm not killing myself. Not like you'd care anyway. i'm staying with a friend for the time being. Don't try to call the police because they have a warrant for your arrest because you missed your court date. I switched my cell number off your line weeks ago and got my number switched. (Which was a lie, but it sounded good.)Don't try to find me or I'll just keep running.

P.S. Beer is in the fridge. Keep drinking all your problems away, but it'll never work.

I grabbed my duffel, opened the door and walked out. I looked back at the house a few times, but nothing stopped me. It took me twenty minutes to get to the parking lot my dad had stopped in earlier. Then I pulled out the card from my pocket, I could see my breath in the cold, spring air.  Walking a little further, I noticed a car coming into the parking lot, the bright lights halted me from seeing who was driving it. I heard a voice come from the window, and I walked over toward it. It was a cop. Shit . Act naturally.

"Hello Officer. Is there a problem"

"Hi, what are you doing wandering around?" Shit. i hadn't thought of that.

"I was staying at my cousins house, a few streets over for a week, I was just walking home."

"They couldn't give you a ride?"

"No, their car broke down, I offered to walk home since my cousin got sick."

"Oh... Wait the Jensons? Do they live on Kraus?" I was unsure what to answer to this, I couldn't tell if it was a legitamite question or if he was trying to trick me.

"Yeah," was the first thing to pop out of my mouth. "Thats them."

"Oh yeah, their car was making a horrible noise, I pulled your uncle over for it the other day." Holy crap. This was working.

"He was telling me, he was taking his car to the shop i think."

"Yeah, alright Miss, do you need a ride home?"

"No, it's ok, it's only a few houses away, I can handle it. I like the fresh air anyhow."

"Alright, Its nice to see young people active, it really livens up the community. Have a nice night Miss."

"You too, Officer." He pulled away, and I was sweating like a pig. I honestly can't believe that worked. I kept walking and finally I got to the house. I realized just then, i had no idea how to explain this or what to say. Do I just say, Hey lady, I know we just met but my dad is abusing me, can I crash here? No. What the hell was I supposed to say? I decide I wouldn't say anything. I would just knock on the door and what ever happened to come out of my mouth was fine.  As soon as I knocked, a little french bulldog came wiggling up to the door. It started barking and the lady from earlier bent down to pick him up, then answered my knock. She looked confused.

"Hi, my name is Carly, we spoke earlier, at the school. You gave me your business card."

"Come in, come in. Boy, you must be freezing, can I get you some tea, hot chocolate, coffee?"
