When Skyler finished her story, she looked over at the others. They were sitting on the desert floor, drinking beer and watching the dying embers of the bonfire.
The dark-haired girl pulled on her braid again. "I swear that story sounds familiar. I think I've heard it before." The girl turned to the boy and said, "Wasn't there a kid that jumped into Devil's Canyon last month over in Silverbell."
The boy shrugged and got up and grabbed another can of beer from the cooler.
The girl looked over at Skyler. "That's where you got the story. It's not made up it's real. Well, the dead kid part is real. Two towns over some kids died, I remember mom going on about it." She gave a short laugh, "Clever how you twisted real life stuff with all that dark thing following them out of mine shaft stuff."
The guy took a few gulps of beer. "That story isn't very scary."
Skyler got up and brushed the dirt off her jeans. "It didn't freak you out?"
"Takes more than a stupid story to freak me out," he said.
Skyler walked over towards the fire and then turned and lifted her shirt. Four long claw marks were just visible in the dying light.
"What the hell..." the boy said.
Skyler looked over at the girl. "My parents thought it would be better if I came and lived with my Aunt for a while after all the things that happened. But you're wrong. I didn't make it up." Skyler pulled out a knife that had been tucked into her waist of her jeans.
The boy shouted out, and the girl began to scramble to her feet.
Skyler lunged towards them, the knife held high and cried out, "Tribute."
