Chapter 2

We are witnessing a memory of Empress's. A time when she was with Jake at a party when they first met. It was a school dance, the gym room was decorated with balloons and lights. It was blue. Empress was with her friends. She was wearing a white dress that came down to her knees. It was fitted and it brought out the blue in her eyes. Her hair was in a tight ponytail slicked back and up with gel. She had on light makeup. She was standing at the punch bowl laughing and talking with her friends. Jake is leaning on the wall with his friends when he notices Empress. He's always had an eye out for her but never had the guts to talk to her. He's wearing black jeans and a white t shirt with a vest. His hair is tussled and gelled with little spikes sticking up. Jake is starring at her when Empress's friend tells her that she's being watched. Empress looks up and notices Jake's glare and walks away from the punch bowl. Her friends stay behind starring at Jake before they get up and follow her out. Jake waits behind a little bit until he gets up and walks out the room to follow Empress. They hear laughter spilling out of the girls bathroom as they sit and lean on the lockers.

It's 9pm and it's dark outside. Moonlight signs through the high windows. The girls start to walk out of the bathroom with Empress in front. They are all laughing until Empress looks up and sees that she has almost ran into Jake. Jake is looking down at her. His friends all do a handshake and tap his shoulder saying that they're heading back into the gym room. Jake looks up at Empress's friends in a beat-it sort of way.

"Hey Empress, we're going back inside."

"OK Lex, I'll see you in there soon."

Jake looks back down at Empress. "Hi."

"Um, hi. Is there a reason you keep starring at me?"

"Maybe I find you pretty."

"Maybe I'm not interested."

"I just wanted to tell you that you always come to school looking pretty." Jake moves towards her and cuffs her face, forcing her to look into his eyes.

"I know I do." Empress backs away and purposely bumps into Jake when walking back into the gym. Jake takes her wrist and turns her back around. She smiles as he moves his hand to hold hers then lets it go. She closes her hand hiding the sheet of paper she slipped inside. Jake watches her go back into the room before he slips back inside.

Empress opens the note Jake slipped into her hand. She smiles and sees that he's given her his number. She looks up half hoping to see Jake starring at her. She then text him.

"Smooth. -E"

"I try to be :) -J"

"Where'd you go? -E"

"Miss me already?-J"

"Don't bet on it. -E"

I will. But I left. I'm at the park now. Where are you? -J"

"Gym room waiting on my father. -E"

"I can see. Look up. -J"

Empress looks up to see nothing. She walks towards the gym doors and still nobody is there.

"Haha. But you're not here. -E"

"That's because I'm behind you. Hey."

Empress turns around and sees Jake leaning against the wall. She starts to smile.

"Hi. What brought you back?"

"You. May I have this dance?"

"There's no music."

"I'll sing."

"You never sing."

"Well someone has been keeping tabs on me after all."

"That's unlikely."

Jake starts to sing "Do You" by Miguel.

"That's an interesting choice." Empress lays her head on Jake's chest. The song ends and Jake pulls Empress into a kiss.

"You know you don't have to stunt in front of your friends to get my attention right baby?"

"If I don't then how will I know you still like me?"

"Please girl you know I've wanted you since Freshmen year."

"You're a man of words not actions. Makes you untrustworthy."

"Damn girl quit playing. When will you be mine?"

"When you act for real and ask me officially."

"Alright fine. Will you be my girl Empress?"

"No."

"What you mean no?"

"I mean no." Empress backs up and walks towards the door. Jake is left behind in disbelief. He then runs to go get her. "Empress! Empress wait!"

Empress stops walking when she reaches outside. Her father is still nowhere in sight.

"Empress Soyer, will you be my girlfriend?"

Her father finally shows up. She turns on her heel and smiles at Jake. "Oh Jake," she starts to walk towards him to feel in the gap. "Didn't you know you had me when you kissed me?" She gives him a peck on the lips then gets into her car. Jake watches her dad pull off before he got into his car and went home.
