There it was.. My sanity was gone. His words cut through me like a hot knife. Those three words peeled away the remaining sanity I had left, and sent me spiraling down into a fairy tale of despair. I turned to him in disbelief. How could I possibly be a vampire? Things like that belong in books and urban legends. Nothing of the stories I was told about mythical creatures, and monsters ever appeared real to me, was everything about the real world I have come to know a lie? I couldn't help but feel this whole thing was some sick trick of fate, or a siren call from destiny? Was I still dreaming? or had my fate really been sealed with only one bite.
"I'm.. I'm a vampire?"
My voice cracked.
"From the second his teeth reached your neck, and your blood touched his lips, you were to become a vampire. You were a vampire then, and you're a vampire now."
I fell to me knees. I felt sick. The horrors I never thought I had to face were coming to life, and they were coming at me like a train.
"That means.. you're one too then..?"
"...Yes..."
His tone was firm and serious. My life was crashing down before me, and there was nothing I could do, only let it happen.
"So what now? am I gonna live forever? be allergic to garlic? despise crucifixes and sleep in coffins? Was I not aloud an option?"
"Its not that simple. Dying from a bite from a Vampire like the man who attacked you does something to the body. The venom corrupts it, and transfigures it, killing it throughout time. First you're skin will begin to wrinkle, and peel off. Then you're hair will fall clumps, and your eyes will dry out. You're bones will age quickly and become fragile, and the pain will be excruciating. You will become a walking corpse. The venom from the bite will kill you're body, however it wont let the mind die. You will walk the earth forever, in pain, ugly and withered with age. Nothing can kill you, but the only way to rejuvenate you're body, and convert back to you're beautiful self again, is to feed off the living. We call these Vampires "Mors" They will kill anything to stay alive, even their own family's. I'm so sorry that I took your life away, and didn't give you didn't give you an option to choose an ugly immortality, or a life that one will grow to hate."
You could almost feel the intensity in his voice. I couldn't tell if I had insulted him, or made him angry. He sounded serious, heartfelt, almost saddened at the thought of me becoming one of them, a Mors. In his voice I could hear grief, and in his eyes I could see sadness. And in the embrace that he had me in within those few seconds, and how he risked his life to kill the man who had already taken mine, I felt protected. I looked away in qualms. I never should have raised my voice at him. He was only doing what he knew was best for me, I felt sorry that he had to make the decision to change my life, but in great detail, I would have it no other way.
"I'm sorry.. I.. thank you.. for not letting me become like that.. I didn't know."
"Look Eleanor, I know this is a lot to take it right now, and for the time being I don't expect you to understand everything that is about to happen, but you must understand this. I wasn't lying about our race being a legend, and stricken from history. Now that your one of us, you can't leave. The life you once had doesn't exist anymore, not while your a vampire."
I began to protest when suddenly the door opened, a short, beautiful young girl appeared in the doorway. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me, and shot a quick glance over to Ronin.
"Oh.. you're awake."
She smiled and walked over to my bedside, carrying a tray, on it was a plate of eggs, bacon and toast, and a glass of milk.
