"Don't be ridiculous." I said, incredulously as I stared at Arabella, my older sister.

She laughed and lifted her shoulders into a shrug. "What? You'd be saying the same thing. I mean, have you seen that guy's mustache?" She said and gestured to Mr. Sanders. An old regular at our family pastry shop, Van Allen Sweets.

Original, I know but it's been up and running since forever... Okay, maybe not forever.

My father's grandmother opened it just before (Or after? I don't really know. It's kind of blurry when I think about it.) World War II and the business has been going until now. So, basically, it has been open since forever.

Anyways, I dared a glance at the said customer and couldn't help but laugh but immediately stopped when we were getting too much attention. "Shut up, Ella." I said, trying to keep the smile out of my voice.

She grinned. "I mean, I have no problem with guys with a mustache or anything but, come on. Stare at it for like a whole thirty seconds and you'll feel like you're staring at a mountain. And not just any mountain. A black mountain." She said, shaking her head. "That's how wavy the guy's mustache is."

There was a moment of silence before both we both ended up cracking up. We were both silenced when the shop's manager, Annaliese Van Allen, also our eldest sister, came sauntering in looking tired and worn out.

I cleared my throat and straightened up before saying, "Hey, Annie. How's it going?" trying to sound casual.

She sighed a deep sigh, that immediately got me feeling tired as well. "Perfect. Just perfect." She said, bitterly.

"Why? What's wrong?" Arabella asked, abandoning her phone.

"You guys know that bakery a few blocks down?" Me and Arabella nodded. "Well, their owner, the one who owns that big firm in Manhattan, keeps calling me. Offering a huge amount of money for this place." She finished.

"What did you tell them?" I asked, feeling nervous.

"No, of course. I wouldn't sell this place, not ever. Especially not to those pigs." Annaliese said, determinedly.

The three of us stayed silent for a short amount of time when we heard the bell ring by the door, signalling a customer.

Annaliese turned to us. "Look, guys. I don't want you to worry about this, okay? Let me handle it. Right now, just serve as much customers as you can. Remember, we need the money." She said and left but not before seeing us nod to make sure we understood.

Me and Arabella sighed and went back to work. I turned to greet the customer and when I saw who it was, I stopped and stared. I mean, who wouldn't when I was practically staring at a freaking Greek god.

Blue-green eyes of Daniel Thorn stared back at me and my stomach did a little flip, my heart raced and I felt a little lightheaded.

I thought about saying something casual like, "Hi! Welcome. Is there anything you would like?" but then all that came out was, "Uhh... Yoda talk, can you?"

When I realized what I just said, I slapped a hand over my mouth. What I got from him was a smirk, his dimple evident on his perfectly sculpted face.

I'm not going to lie. Like every other girl in Blackwell Academy, I was one of the girls who was completely under his spell. But unlike other girls in my school, I know how to restrain myself.

But that still doesn't exempt me from becoming totally tongue-tied at the presence of Daniel Thorn, himself.

In other words, I had a major, almost embarrassing, crush on Daniel Thorn.

I lowered my hand and cleared my throat before saying a very shy, "Can I get you anything?" with my eyes focused on the cash register.

His smirk didn't go unnoticed though. "One apple strudel and a slice of a strawberry cheesecake, please." He said.

I nodded, still unable to look at him. "Is there anything else?" I asked, punching in his order. I glanced and him, seeing him shake his head. "Okay. That'll be $7.35." I said.

After receiving his money, I turned to go and get his order when Arabella came out of nowhere, nearly scaring me half to death, holding a paper bag before giving it to Daniel, with The Smile on her face.

You see, The Smile is something Arabella uses to her advantage, simply to let people believe that she's all innocent and nice so that they could do whatever she wanted them to.

And since she was only a year older than me, I've been bearing witness to it happening a lot of times and every time she uses that smile, someone either gets hurt, gets sent to detention or something worse than detention like... doing an extra math homework. Suffice to say, everyone falls for it.

And, boy, was Daniel Thorn falling for it. Not only was he falling, he was tripping, bumping and completely smashing over it.

Well, there goes my breakfast.
