Yuri looked over at the college campus from his cab. Colorado was so different from the small town of Hasetsu in Japan. He couldn't believe he got the chance to be a foreign exchange student and train in America!
He had gotten a scholarship to skate competitively in the states. His family and friends were overjoyed, he could become famous! Yes, he was following his dream, but he was nervous too.
What if he wasn't as good as the American skaters? What if he messes up on his English and his accent is bad? At least he would be in a dorm with other international students.
When he arrived at his dorm with his luggage, there was a frenzy of students getting moved in. When he found his dorm room he saw two names on the door, Yuuri Katsuki and Phichit Chulamont.
He had talked to Phichit online before moving, so at least he knew one person. Phichit was very peppy and was always posting on Instagram. He had come to the United States to study art, but he mostly wanted to be a photographer.
Yuri on the other hand was undecided in his major. All he really wanted to do was skate on a national level and become a professional. It's been his dream ever since he begged his mother to buy him a pair of ice skates at age five.
"Yuri!" Phichit shouted from inside the dorm. "It's nice to finally meet you in person!"
Phichit was all moved in so he helped him unpack. Their window had a perfect view of snowy mountains in the distance, reminding him of his home. He felt that he might enjoy it here.
Later that night, Yuri couldn't sleep no matter how hard he tried. He wasn't used to sleeping anywhere but in his home. He rolled out of bed and grabbed his skates, he hoped the rink was open at this hour.
To his luck, the rink was open. This was his favorite time to skate. No one around to bother him and his thoughts. Being a night owl made him go to the skate rink often in the middle of the night.
When he entered the rink he stopped in shock, someone else was here! He was always anxious around new people, he was hoping he'd have this time for himself.
A muscular man with silver hair was gliding over the ice. It was clear he had been skating for a long time, it was beautiful. When he saw Yuri, he smiled and skated towards him to lean on the wall.
"I didn't know anyone else here skated at this hour, I thought I had the rink to myself," the man said with a thick accent Yuri didn't recognize.
"I-I'm sorry," he said, he didn't need to make any rivals on the first day.
The man's eyes lit up, "hey I've seen you before!" He said. "We live in the same hall,"
Yuri knew there was another skater who got the scholarship from another country but he didn't know who. Just by seeing him earlier, he clearly was a shoe-in for the scholarship.
"My name is Viktor Nikiforov, I'm from Russia!" He said as he motioned them to sit on one of the benches together.
"Uh-I'm Yuri Katsuki, I came from Japan," Yuri said with a slight stutter. He felt his social anxiety start to bubble up inside of him.
Viktor did not hesitate to start a conversation and soon Yuri actually felt comfortable talking to him. They talked about ice skating, their hometowns, and Viktor gushed about how much he missed his dog Makkachin.
As they walked back to their dorm together, Yuri realized Viktor's room was only two doors down.
"I guess we'll be seeing a lot of each other soon at practices," Viktor said as he winked. He then went to his dorm and waved goodbye.
What was that all about? It was almost like he was flirting with him. Yuri wasn't bothered by it though, college was going to be interesting.
