Zero jolted awake, gasping for breath, and groaned as he felt the pounding headache in his temples. He struggled to remember the nightmare that had left him feeling so exhausted and tired, but it remained elusive. All he could recall was the pain in his head, as if he'd bumped it on something hard. He longed for a peaceful sleep, devoid of dreams or nightmares, and closed his eyes, pulling the blanket tightly around himself.
Outside, the chilly winter air enveloped the city of Tokyo. The neighborhood bustled with its usual daily activities. The house next door stood empty, its residents already gone for the day. Tokyo's streets were bustling with people of all kinds, each heading in different directions. Shops and stores opened up, adding to the symphony of noises that defined the city's daily life.
Back in Zero's room, the loud slam of an alarm clock echoed as he slammed it against the wall. He had barely closed his eyes for a few minutes when he noticed the time displayed on the grinning face of his Doraemon alarm clock.
It was already past 10 a.m.?
Zero's eyes widened in shock. He was late. The damn alarm clock hadn't woken him up like it usually did with its first ring. How deeply had he slept, and how long had that strange dream lasted?
Zero rushed through his morning routine, taking a quick shower, throwing on his school uniform, and grabbing Bloody Rose before leaving the house without bothering to eat breakfast. Fortunately, he had done his laundry a few days ago and had a winter coat to shield him from the chilly weather today.
He arrived at the train platform a few minutes later, but his frustration mounted when he saw the train pulling away just as he arrived.
Dammit all!
This delay was likely due to the persistent headache that still throbbed in his head. Now he was very late and had to wait for the next train. The mere thought of it intensified his headache, and Zero rubbed his temples, trying to soothe the pain. It was then that a voice near his ear startled him.
"Ze... ro... What are you... doing?" Kaito Takamiya slowly inquired, leaning closer to Zero's ear.
"Kaito! What the heck?!" Zero turned to his friend, seemingly ready to strangle him, unwilling to deal with any additional headaches. However, Kaito quickly slipped away, laughing at Zero's reaction.
“Hahaha... Zero, you're in a pretty foul mood today. Even a prefect like you managed to be late. Nice going.”
“Shut up, Kaito! Don’t make me shoot you. You're late too. Did you spend the whole night playing video games again?”
“Hai. Hai.” Kaito replied, unable to deny it to Zero.
Although they had known each other for a long time as fellow hunters, there were aspects of Zero's life that remained a mystery to Kaito, particularly concerning his childhood. Yagari-sensei had never shared any information when he introduced the two, and Zero had kept silent on the matter.
“Hey, there’s the train.” Kaito pointed out and turned to Zero.
“Oi, Zero, are you still with us?”
Zero cradled his head in his hands, experiencing a sharp pain as a pair of crimson eyes flashed through his mind.
“What the hell?! Part of that nightmare?” he mumbled, attempting to recall the dream, but only managing to worsen his headache in the process.
"-ero! Hey, Zero!" Kaito's voice reached him, accompanied by a gentle shake.
"Zero, I know you don’t wanna be late, so let’s get on the train. Are you okay, Zero?"
