The sun peeked through the curtains, landing on a sleeping, dark haired girl. She stirred in her sleep, then awoke, revealing deep chocolate brown eyes to the world. The door opened, and an old man walked in. He was the image of wizardry: tall, old, silver-bearded, and wearing a cloak. "Good morning, Phoenix."
"Morning Grandpa." Phoenix smiled at the old man.
"Ready to learn?" He smiled at Phoenix, knowing her answer already.
"I was ready when I was born. Let's do it!" She jumped out of bed, and raced to the garden, the old man following a little behind.
"Time travel... is complicated to master. Go forward one minute to start. I'll see you in a minute, okay?"
"Okay."
She spun slightly and disappeared into the void of time.
The old man stayed there until sundown, sure she would come back. He watched the place where she left, just before the bed of roses. She would come back right there. Just one more minute. She didn't. He fell asleep crying, "I failed you, Ruby. Your daughter... oh, Ruby, forgive me." "Forgive me."
