The bell rings signaling the end of the school day. Everyone piles out of the classroom anxious to start their weekend. I stand up and shove my binder into my bag, and pull out my headphones as i make my way into the jam-packed hallway. I shove my way through the crowd and head to my locker.
I open my locker and shove my books onto the crowded shelf containing all my textbooks, and binders. I grab my homework off the shelf and shove it into my bag. After i'm pretty sure I've grabbed everything, i slam my locker shut and make my way to the exit.
As i walk into my house the smell of fresh apple pie floods my senses. I set my bag down and make my way into the kitchen. I find my mom at the stove looking through a cook book.
"Hey mom." I say as i go to the fridge to get a drink.
She turns around and smiles"Hey sweetheart! How was school?"
"Fine." I reply. "I'm gonna go watch TV."
"Okay sweetheart."
I walk into the living room and plop down on the couch. I grab the remote off the coffee table and flip through the channels until i find the one channel i don't dislike.
"Oh! Aubrey" I hear my mom call from the kitchen "I have some errands i have to run tonight, you don't mind staying home for a few hours do you?"
" Yeah, that's fine." I sigh
"Alright sweetheart, i'll see you when i get home. Love you!" She calls as she's walking out the door, before i even get the chance to say it back.
I look back at TV and start to watch the movie that's playing.
About two hours after my mom left my phone buzzes. I sigh and pick up my phone off the end table. The bright screen flickers to life, displaying a text message,
'Hey Aubrey, something came up and i'm not going to be home for a few days. So i would like you to head up to my friend Bobby's place until i get back. His address is 2194 Main St. , Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Tell him that i sent you. Love you, See you when i get back!'
'Oh my god mom.' I think. I look at the clock 5:38 it reads. Ugh of course my mom is shipping me off to some "friends" house 3 hours away from here. I decide its best not to argue with her because i usually get nowhere with that.
I get up off the couch and head to my room. I open my door and walk into my room, looking for a light switch. After i find that, I grab a bag out from under my bed and set it on my bed. I walk over to my drawer and just grab a few outfits not knowing how long i will be gone for. I stuff them in my bag and then search around for my makeup and hairbrush. After shoving those into my bag i grab my toothbrush, and other stuff from my bathroom.
I look up into the bathroom mirror, my blonde hair cascading over my shoulder with little ringlets of curls. My greenish blue eyes seem light less like clouds moved in front of the light that illuminates them. My nose is dotted with freckles, and my skin looks paler then usual like id just seen a ghost. Most of my makeup has worn off except for my mascara and my bronze eye shadow that brings out the color of my eyes. I never really noticed how much i looked like my mom, and how much i didn't look like her. My mom used to tell me that i remind her so much of my father, but i wouldn't know because I've never met him.
I don't know much about my father except for the stuff my mom has told me about him which isn't much. She told me that he had been visiting from out of state and she met him when she worked as a waitress at a diner. At the time they were only 16. My father had given my mom his number and they hung out a lot when he was visiting. She ended up having a one night stand with him, i'm the product of that one night stand. But my father had left the next morning without saying a word to my mom about him leaving. So she never told him about me. Well, i mean she tried to call him when she found out but he changed his number. So he doesn't even know that i exist. To be honest i don't even know if he's alive still. She never told me his name either, so all i know about my father is that he is the guy who left my mother to raise their child alone.
I walk out of the bathroom because i don't like to think about my father that much, it just makes me pissed. I quickly look through my bag again just to make sure i grabbed everything. I did. I pick up my bag and head to my door. Once i get there i stop,i look back at my room and take a mental picture of it. I sigh and turn the lights off and close the door. I make sure to grab my phone off the coffee table and grab the keys to my moms jeep off the counter. I unlock the front door and head out, locking the door again behind me.
My mom's jeep is a silver 2010 jeep patriot, some of the paint has chipped off the car so it looks like we've had it for years, when in reality we've only had it for about 6 months. It also has way more then ten dents in the car, honestly by now i thought we would have gotten rid of it. Whenever i bring this up to my mom she just says that she cant bear to part with the old rust bucket. I don't know why the car looks like someone just ran it over with a steam roller, my mom mostly just uses it. I've only ever driven it twice before.
I open the car door and throw my bag into the passenger seat. I shove the keys into the ignition and start the car. The engine humms to life. I take one last look at my house, i have a really bad feeling about this but i push the thought back into my mind as i put the car into reverse, and back out of the driveway. I take off down the street starting my 3 hour drive.
'This is gonna be great' i think sarcastically.
