I sighed as I stared out the window. Colorful leaves in various shades of red and yellow fluttered in the breeze, landing softly on the road. If only I was as free as the leaves.
My daydream was interrupted by a loud thud on my desk. Mrs. Fritz stood in front of me, and the glare she gave indicated I was in trouble.
"Cedar," she said in her stern voice. "Could you tell the class about the English settlements in Jamestown? Since you were obviously paying attention, this should be easy for you."
"Uhhh..." My face grew hot. To my left, I saw some of my classmates snicker. Behind them sat Circe, who shook her head in disappointment. A weight of guilt settled in my stomach.
Another student raised their hand. "Yes, Charles," Mrs. Fritz called.
"The Jamestown settlement was named in honor of King James," Charles answered. With a smirk he looked at me and added, "To those who were listening."
There was more laughter from the class. Through the noise I heard Circe. "That's too bad," she remarked. I hung my head, too embarrassed to look up.
