Noire: Detective of L.A.

Chapter 1: Upon Reflection, Part 2

Noire and Beckowski walked up to the gun store. The owner, looking rather confused, greeted them. "Can I help you gentlemen?"

"I'm Officer Noire and this is my partner, Beckowski. Can you tell us anything about this gun?"

The store owner peered at the pistol. "Smith and Wesson, Model 27. Registered Magnum, chambered for .357, nickel-plated with pearl grips. Same gun used by General Patton."

Beckowski let out a laugh. "You're not suggesting he's the owner?"

"No, I'm not." replied the owner.

"You seem to know a lot about the gun." Noire commented.

"Well, I ought to. I sold it. Y'know this piece will stop a rhino." said the store owner, while striking a pose with the gun. "These babies are only available through special order. Here's my Smith and Wesson order book ."

"Mind if I have a look?" asked Noire.

"Be my guest. This is about something bad, right?"

Noire ignored the store owner and opened the order book.

"Model 27 with pearl grips, Noire. You see it?"

"We're in luck Beckowski. Ernie Burkhart. 203 South Glen Street. Bought the gun in February '46. Thank you sir," said Noire, addressing the store owner. "You've been a big help."

"Anytime officers. Always willing to help out the LAPD."

Noire and Beckowski stepped out of the shop and walked towards the car. "So do we call it in?" Beckowski asked.

"Let's see if he's home first. Owning the gun doesn't mean he pulled the trigger."

Beckowski rubbed his eyes tiredly. "Okay. In for a penny, in for a pound. Lead away, Gunga Din."

Noire started the car and started to drive towards Burkhart's address.

"Now was that so hard, Beckowski? Just because we're in uniform, doesn't mean we can't use our initiative."

"I guess so. Seems too good to be true though. One of a kind murder weapon, bought locally with a real name. If Burkhart's our shooter, he's no criminal mastermind."

"Most of them aren't. That's why they get caught. Two out of every three crimes are committed on impulse."

"Another fact from the Noire Encyclopedia of Thin Air. You really are full of it."
