Noire: Detective of L.A. Part 14

Chapter 5: The Fallen Idol

"Noire, Jackson! You guys have a new case." the captain announced. "Two women, possible drunk drive."

Noire sat up in his chair. He was tired. Ever since the Patterson case, he had mountains of paperwork to complete. Jackson seemed worse off, but thankfully, still managed to maintain his sense of humor. "How is that a case?" he snorted.

"The broad says she was doped, and that someone tried to kill her." answered the captain.

"Where did this take place?" Noire asked.

"That's the part you're gonna love. It happened right across the street."

"What?"

The captain nodded his head. "A Chevy Styleline took a nosedive off the escarpment, fetched up under the Cola King billboard. So, hop to it boys! We got bad guys to catch!"

Noire stood up from his desk and grabbed his coat and hat. "See you later, fellas." he said, tipping his hat. "Try not to work too hard."

Jackson smiled. "Look at you, bantering with the boys. Brings a tear to my eye to see my little caterpillar grow wings."

Noire rolled his eyes. "I'm just trying to fit in."

Jackson shook his head. "Educated, hard-working, straight as an arrow... I hate to break it to you Noire, but you'll never fit in at Central."

"Whatever, Jackson. Let's just get to the crash site."

"Stop just up ahead, Noire." Jackson said. Noire parked the car and they stepped towards the site. Noire noticed a woman sitting in a nearby vehicle. She looked beat up, bruised, and woozy, but despite all that, she still looked rather good. "She looks familiar." Noire noted.

"Well, that's June Ballard. Tarzan's sister, Beast of the Amazon. She's married to Guy McAfee. The captain's moved to Vegas, but the two of them still have juice."

Noire nodded. June Ballard was an actor. No wonder she looked familiar.

He walked over to the patrolman on the site. "Noire, Traffic."

"Detective Noire. Hey, Jackson!" the patrolman exclaimed, giving Stefan a playful punch. "Long time no see."

"You could've called this in by megaphone, Enrique." Jackson joked. "Noire, this is Enrique Gonzalez. He was a pretty decent middleweight."

"What have we got, Enrique?"

Noire asked.

"Broad drives right through the empty lot and over the side of the escarpment. Her story is that a movie producer drugged her and her friend, and sent the car flying off the cliff."

"Was anyone hurt?"

"Driver, over there, is beat up, but not too bad considering. If she hadn't hit that billboard, we'd be scraping both of them off the pavement. The passenger is a Jessica Hamilton- she's just a kid. She's pretty knocked around."

"The kid gonna be alright?" asked Jackson, concerned.

"I think so. They took her to Central Receiving. If you guys wanna look around, I could stall the ambulance."

"Thanks." said Noire. "Do that."

"Oh, one more thing. Watch out for the driver. She cuts rough. If you're looking for the coroner, he's down by the crash site."

Noire jogged down the escarpment. It was a miracle the driver and passenger had survived such a drop. He walked over to the car to examine the interior. The windshield was shattered and the front of the car was smashed flat. "The driver and passenger are lucky they weren't further injured."
