"Do you want some tea?" my voice broke the silence that had fell upon me and Paul. My hands were hugging my body and my eyes were set on the man who was sitting on the couch, his eyes wandering around the apartment. I desperately wanted to chase away the anxious feeling within my chest that this man seemed to be causing.
"Oh, no. It's okay, luv. Yer know, you can sit down, I don't bite." a light laugh escaped through Paul's small lips, as he patted the seat next to him on the love seat. The gesture snapped me out of whatever daze I had gone to and a nervous laughter shook my chest as I sat next to him, putting a safe distance between our bodies. This seemed to not bother Paul at all, for he just shuffled his body closer to mine and got more comfortable on the soft surface of the love seat, his hazel eyes now set on my form. The lights in the apartment were not turned on, the only source of light being the moon which bathed Paul's face in a silvery glimmer.
"Are you ummmm... sure you don't want some tea or maybe something to eat? I could make something, you know. I really don't-" my ranting was stopped abruptly by Paul's fingers being pressed against my lips, making me take in a sharp breath from the unexpected contact with his warm skin.
"Shhh, you worry too much, luv." he said and removed his fingers, a haunting smile playing on his lips. "It kind of reminds me of me mum." I looked up to see Paul looking through the window, his hazel eyes being lost in a memory of some sorts. "She used to worry about everyone too, yer know." Paul turned his gaze towards me, his hand touching my shoulder. "You're shivering, you must be freezing. Take this." soon a pressure of Paul's jacket was on my shoulders and the warmth of it embraced my body, chasing away the cold air.
"The heating must be off, I forgot to turn it up." I stated and shook my head. "Your mum, she sounds like a lovely woman." Paul's hand didn't leave my shoulder as he played with the material of his jacket, his hazel eyes still locked with my own.
"She was. She was a midwife, a nurse with a big heart."
"What was her name?" I asked, intrigued by the man before my eyes who was letting me in, a random bird who he had saved.
"Mary. Mary McCartney. A stubborn woman, may I say, she didn't care about herself, as long as the people around her were okay. A typical nurse, I guess." a bitter laugh escaped through his lips, and soon I placed my hand over his to comfort him. "She didn't even mention the lump in her breast or the pain she was experiencing, pleasing others was only on her mind. My brother... my brother and I used to go to visit her at the hospital with our dad, I suppose that he knew that she was... dying and made us go visit her as often as we could." I felt Paul squeezing my hand, as he swallowed the lump in his throat.
"How-how old were you?" I asked, trying to avert his attention from those depressing thoughts, hating to see him so sad. My mind was still comprehending the situation, for I had never expected to hear such a personal story and I felt bad that I was not being so honest with him.
"I was 14 and me brother was 12, we were just kids and didn't know that it would be our last visit. The next thing you know, she's gone and there's nothing we could do. I still have the memories, thou, and I'll hold on to them for the rest of me life." Paul finished the story and sighed, his head resting on the back of the love seat with his eyes closed.
"Paul..." I didn't know what to say and something was telling me that not many people have heard the story he had just shared with me. "I'm sorry..." it was all I could think of, but I meant every word.
"It's okay, luv. I'm fine, now..."
"My parents... they're not out of town. I actually haven't told this to anyone, I guess the wound is still fresh but..." I took in a deep breath, preparing myself for the truth which I had hidden for so many years.
