"You're out here late,"
"Well, you're not wrong,"
Alpha would have cried. She would have cried enough tears to fill endless oceans, but try as she might, she can't bring herself to mourn for an empty coffin.
"Soldiers usually stay up late, but I don't often find them wandering the cemetery,"
"Then why are you here?"
Alpha could hear her strides coming closer, the zipper of her boots jingling, and a light breeze lifted her curls tickling her cheeks.
"On a stroll I guess you could say. Enjoying the stars, the moon, and the grav..."
"You're being a sarcastic bitch," Alpha cut her off. She clasped her hands into fist at her sides and clenched her teeth, eyes narrowed with frustration. What gives her the right to manipulate everyone? Just because she stands at 6'2" and weighs over 180 doesn't give her the ability to prance around and step on whatever she pleases to get above everyone.
"Those are harsh words. Are you sure you want to say that in front of your friend?"
Alpha's eyes widened, shoulders relaxed and she released her fist. She never met anyone in her entire life that could twist her words as much as she could. Alpha was proven smarter than most anything she's come encountered with, but whatever accusation or thought was said out loud it was tested by Her. It was like a second guess that was tormenting her every thought, and she hated being proven wrong, so her chest began to burn and it roared up her throat until it hit the tip of her tongue.
"He's not in there,"
She stared at the stone. There was no engraving or recognition of who had died, and he was to die forgotten, left in the dust, a memory only she would recall.
"I know," The night became sterile. No chirps from the crickets, no breeze to blow away the eerie fog that circled Alpha's legs, no owls hooting in the distance.
Alpha felt a hand squeeze her shoulder and Aurora had squatted down to be leveled with her ear.
"If there's one thing I learned through my experience, it's to never make attachments. You end up making brash, harmful decisions that revolve around your loved ones instead of the task at hand,"
She postured back up and began to stride away, but before leaving the maze of gravestones she said over shoulder.
"It's better to save a thousand lives than to save one,"
Alpha glanced back to the headstone in front of her, eyes becoming glassy, heart pounding and her ears ringing slightly. It wouldn't be possible for her to let go of her attachments. She wasn't strong enough to let go of them... yet. But she did however take one thing into consideration. Something she had never really felt deemed as necessary because the situation had never come up before.
The words echoed in her ears and danced through her brain,
"It's better to save a thousand lives than to save one."
