He couldn't stop grimacing at me. Damian, the asshole who won't forgive me for exposing his secret side-chick to his now ex-girlfriend, which was a total accident because I though they ended their dysfunctional relationship way back, was now plotting to destroy me a few feet away. My core was heating up as I stood in the middle of the lunch line with no escape as he sat there huffing and puffing. I tried to pay quickly, for a couple of french toast sticks weren't worth my life. I shuffled my way past and just as I thought I was free I heard a booming voice yell my name. I froze for a second then spun around,"look man, I don't want any trouble." He was still seated but as soon as I was done talking it looked like he got angrier. As he rose up, so did my fear, it was as if I had awakened a beast. He began to walk over and the crowd around us was at a stand still. His shadow blanketed over me. I couldn't get a word out, and I began to back away subconsciously. He blurted out, "where the hell do you think you're going?!" Pointing his finger,"don't you fucking move, I will-"
BWACK!
Suddenly the crowd gasped simultaneously. I blinked at what just happened . Damian just got punched mid sentence.
The blow was came from the side and was hard enough to knock him out of his balance. He woozily got back up still holding his finger like he was about to sputter something else to his new adversary, but his eyes went crossed and his speech all muddled. He fell to the ground like a stack of five potato sacks were just tipped over with a ground shaking thud. For a moment the crowd was silent, even the teachers that just arrived were speechless. Crowd went wild and the teachers proceeded to check on Damian. The only one who wasn't cheering was the man who saved me. He was staring at what he had just done and then he look at me. I recognized him from my classes, his name was Brendon, Brendon Urie.
I was in shock, holding my french sticks close. He finally said," hey are you alright?" I looked at his scaved knuckles, "more like are YOU alright." I tossed my french toast sticks in the trash to look at his hands," that was one punch..." He shoed my hands away telling me it was worth it,"asshats like him shouldn't even think about hurting a lady, especially you." I attacked him with a hug mid sentenced just like he punched Damian. Throughout the year I knew he kinda liked me but I didn't know he would do something to this extent.
He was the complete opposite of Damian, heroic and respectable. And unlike Damian's sub-par passion for football, Brendon had an immense passion for music. He'd tell me about his new band. I think it was called Anxiety at the Coffee Shop.... Or something like that; we'd bond over his dreams, but whenever he caught himself running on too long he'd glance over with his rich eyes and ask about how I was doing, genuinely concerned.
The bell rang and for everyone else it was back to the regular routine. I continued to talk, still in his embrace,"why'd you do that for me." He replied," well I figured if he ruined that beautiful face of yours I wouldn't have something to look forward to everyday anymore." I blushed, but them said to him directly ," so all I am is a pretty face?" jokingly. He got nervous," um, no, I -I - I didn't mean it like that-" I chuckled putting him back at ease, nudging his shoulder. He winced because that punch threw out his whole arm. "Oh shit sorry" and it began to be a back and forth then I realized we had to get back to class. Brendon ran his bloody fingers through his raven colored hair ," so do you maybe wanna hang out later?" With his beautiful half smile. "So you think you can punch a guy and then ask me out" I smirked playfully. I leaned in and kissed him on the cheek," I'll meet you after school."
