This New Thing Called Blushing

“Explain to me why you’re going again?” Alex asked for I would guess was the five millionth time. I mean to be quiet frank I was one nerve away from going ninja on her.

“Because Alex, it’s a double date. Not just Noel and I, and a date would be good for the illusion. You know, me and Noel going strong, so strong we go on double dates I mean that’s like married couple stuff!” I said throwing my lip gloss onto the vanity and turning to face her.

“Okay, first off is Noel in on this ‘illusion’ or are you just playing him Logan? You have to take into account that even though he’s a complete and total jerk it’s not okay to manipulate people Alex! Are you thinking about that? Why are you so into this, not three hours ago you were trying to convince me that you didn’t even like Walker, he was just your brothers friend that you put up with!” She sat up in my bead from her laying position to look me in the eye.

“It’s not about Walker Alex, it’s about Emily.” I said the last part quietly.

“Emily?”

“The double date is with Walker and Emily.” It wasn’t just me that didn’t like Emily, neither of us did. And I knew the only way Alex would be okay with this is if she knew that I had another motive. I’m not saying Walker wasn’t an added bonus.

“So what’s the game plan?” She asked scooting her body to the edge of the bed.

“Um, I haven’t thought that far, all I know is that Walker asked Noel if we wanted to go on a double date with him and Emily, doesn’t that sound like it’s a challenge that I won’t? I mean if you know Walker?”

“I guess it does, but what are you gonna do once you guys get there? What’s your goal I guess is my point.”

“I’m not sure, I need your help! You’re my best friend this stuff is in your job description!”

“I think I got it… lets get you ready.”

“Logan! Noels here!” I heard Josh scream from what sounded like the front door.

Alex and I exchanged looks, “Go!” She said pushing me out of the bedroom door.

We both bolted down the stairs to see my brother holding one of the front doors open as he scowled at Noel who had a worried look painted on his face.

“Noel.” I walked straight up to him giving him a kiss on the cheek.

“Hey there beautiful.” His eyes remained locked on my brother as he pulled his hands around my waist and kissed the top of my head. I felt a blush rise to my cheeks, but reminded myself that Noel was not the kind of guy I liked and I was pretending.

“I’m going out, make sure you get the card mom and dad left you for your date” josh said while grabbing his jacket, and then Alex caught his eye. “Want to come?” He asked her nonchalantly, but I knew just from that simple question she was having a seizer on the inside.

“S-sure.” Alex said, her eyes were the size of gold balls and her face was red.

“Go get dressed in some of Logan’s clothes. We’re going to a party.”

She nodded scurrying up stairs, not looking back once.

“Well, were just gonna be going then.” I said pulling out of Noels grasp, only to link my arm with his to give it a tug.

“Oh yeah we probably should go, well I’ll see you at school Josh?” Noel said backing away with me.

“Whatever, Logan you go the card?”

“Right here.” I said holding up my clutch to my brother as we continued backing away.

Josh nodded and we turned walking to the car as Noel opened the door for me, causing me to blush again.

Really can I see an operating manual to turn that off?

I watched Noel walk around the front of the car and to his side, opening the door, sliding in and driving off all done in silence.

“Where are we going?” I asked trying to break the incredibly awkward emptiness in the air.

“Um this restaurant that Walker knows, he’s apparently friends with the owner or something.” His hands resituated themselves on the steering wheel.

“Oh, that’s neat.” I said shrugging my shoulders.

“Yeah, you know Emily’s his date right?” He asked looking over at me for just tiny second and then backa t the road.

“Yeah? Why?”

“I just didn’t think you liked her. I mean I didn’t think you liked me either, but you’re here so I guess I’m not very good at judging you now am I?” He asked chuckling to himself.

I felt guilt wash over me. I’m using him. This is bad. I have to tell him, Alex was right. This is wrong.

“Logan, we’re here.” Noel said waving his hand in front of my face while the other was holding open my door.

I gave him a weak and half hearted smile as he stepped leaving room for me to step out of the car. Once I was on my feet he gestured for me to take his hand while he closed my door with his other. We walked to the doors of the restaurant as he ‘Oh so smoothly’ pulled the car key from his pocket, pointing the key over his shoulder and locking the car with a small honk. He slyly put it back into his pocket, smirking as reached the door and he opened it. I blushed again at how smooth he was about everything, and then stepped inside the restaurant ducking my head so no one could see my rose red cheeks.

“Table for two?” The girl at the front podium asked and my eyes shot to her from where they were scanning the restaurant.

“Actually, we’re here with some others were meeting up with. Should be under the last name Johnson.” Noel stepped up to her so we weren’t in the walk way.

“Oh, let me look for you then.” She said and giggled. The giggle played in my ears and I remembered it. I couldn’t really place it but I’d heard it before I’m more than sure of it.

“You do that.” Noel said looking over at me and giving me a look like did you hear her giggle?

Not that he had heard it somewhere else like I felt like I had, but that it was kind of a creepy giggle when she did it. One you’d hear in a horror movie.

She giggled again to herself this time, and it clicked. Shes that girl from the hallway. That little freshman that Walker was with.

Small world eh?

“Right this way.” She giggled again and I had a strong urge to rip out her giggle cords.

Not to sound creepy or anything.

She led us through the restaurant to a section that was curtained off with a sign on it that said VIP.

I looked at Noel who shrugged his shoulders before we were led into the curtained off area.
