Me and my dad were like two peas in a pod. We didn't need anyone else. Then came that dreaded day. The day that changed my life forever.
"Luke!" dad called from downstairs.
I run down stairs ready to spend time with him. "Yeah dad?"
"How would you like to go get some burgers at the Burger Shack?" He asks with pleading eyes knowing he wants them more than me.
"You know I'm always up for a burger give me 15 minutes to get a shower and get dressed."
"Okay hurry up I'm starving." He says going to sit on the couch and turn on some chick flick that he wants to watch.
I get upstairs and find a note in my shoe that says "You're next." I roll my eyes and put it in my pocket ignoring it and shaking it out off my chest. I put my grey vans on and my black skinny jeans and a Panic! At The Disco T-shirt. And run downstairs ready to get some burgers from me and dad's favorite place.
"Hey dad you ready to go?" I put my black hair to the side and smile with my dimples showing. God I hate my dimples. I walk over to the love seat and sit on it and turn the TV off.
"Hey now boy lets not get in too much of a rush here I was watching A Walk to Remember. That's my favorite movie man. I swear kid you look like the kid who is depressed as crap." He says very ironically.
"There is a word for those people dad." I say. "Emo. And I just like their style I am not emo I just dress like it. Anyways I am starving let us go eat."
"Yes dear." He says. We have always had a joke about me nagging like a wife would to her husband. "Your chariot awaits my lady." He bows like a guard would to a princess.
I roll my eyes and walk to the car and he follows behind me. I click my seat belt. He gets in the driver's seat and doesn't fasten his, he never has for as long as I can remember. Even though my mom died in a car accident when I was 4. He pulled out of the driveway and we we were on our way to The Burger Shack. We were halfway there and at a red light a blue and white Camaro came flying down the road out of nowhere and hit the driver's side of our jeep. The car flipped twice and we were upside down I opened my eyes everything was blurry but I saw clearly that my dad was not in the car anymore. I tried to move but my leg had gotten cut with a piece of glass and was bleeding not too bad but enough to make me limp if I was to get out of the car. I also noticed some blood on my lip and realized my nose had hit the dash board. Why hadn't the air bag come up?
"DAD! DAD! WHERE DID YOU GO?" I yell getting a huge headache while yelling out for the one person who has loved me most in my entire 17 years. I hear sirens but don't see anything and hear them for about 5 minutes before seeing them coming from all the way down the street. They can't be that loud that I heard them from a mile away. They finally reach the car and a medic comes over to me and I push him away. "Where is my dad you have to save my dad before me. I'm not getting out of this car without my dad found." The medic looks at me then above the car and yells something very unclear.
"Okay son-" He starts to say but I get defensive very quickly.
"Don't ever call me son I am not your son." I say sharply.
The other medic comes over their and shoos the other medic away by a nod of the head. The first medic looks and walks away.
"We found your dad kid. But you have to get out of the car to see him. Will you do that for me?" says the second medic. I nod my head and allow him to get me out. First he gets some kind of pliers out and cuts the seatbelt from around my waist. Then grabs a bandage out from his bag and places it on my leg. It sticks to my jeans and he grabs my hand and then my waist and he pulls me out of the jeep. I lay on the ground and try to sit up. "Don't rush yourself kid you might pass out." He says holding me down to the ground softly not forcing me but more like comforting me. I slowly rise to a sitting up position and then on my hands and knees and slowly put one foot on the ground at a time and stand up slowly and I walk around the car pacing myself to see my dad and then I see the horrific scene. The medics are getting ready to put my father in a body bag. That's when I said screw unconsciousness that's my dad and run over to him and kneel beside his body and start to cry. One of the police officer's pry me off of him and start to hold me trying to comfort me and surprisingly I let him. One of the medics comes up to me and the officer.
"Can I speak to him alone please?" He asks the police officer. The officer nods and walks away. I avoid eye contact with the man. "Your dad was alive when I first got to him and he told me to tell you two things. One is that he loves you very much and you meant everything to him. And second was kind of random but he said you would understand. He says inside the hooker's leg. I don't know what that means but I'm sure you do and your dad is trying to tell you something." He says and I suddenly come to the realization that my dad wasn't joking when he said many things are found in hooker's besides STDs.
I nod my head and whisper I love you in my dad's ear. I walk with the police officer to the squad car with tears rolling down my eyes.
"Can you tell me your name?" Asks the officer.
"Luke, Luke Matthews." I say avoiding eye contact just like I did with the medic. Just like I would be doing to with a lot of people from now on.
"Okay I just have to ask you some questions and then we have to decide who you are going to stay with." Says the officer. How old are you?"
"17 about to be 18." I say looking at my feet.
"When is your birthday?" He asks looking up at me and typing on his computer his fingers moving swiftly.
"March 17, 1998." I say my voice becoming shaky coming to actual realization to what had just happened 30 minutes ago.
"Okay and what is today's date?" He asks his eyes still locked on his computer.
"March 10th 2016." I say concentrating on what I say because I have no other family and am not about to get put in a foster home.
"Okay well you have no record, you have a driver's license and a car. You are a straight A student. But I have to ask. Do you have anyone else you can stay with?"
"It was just me and dad no one else bothered to care." I say with the biggest attitude that I have had in a long time.
"Okay well I'll tell you what. I will talk to a judge and get you emancipated and then when you're 18 you can legally live by yourself how does that sound? That way you won't have to give up the comfort of your own home and have a chance of going back to your house." He says.
I make eye contact with him. "Why would you do that for me?"
"Because I see potential in your eyes." He says looking deeply into my eyes. I wish he knew how wrong he was.
"Thank you. So much" I hold out my hand to shake his.
"Your welcome son. Now let's get to the courthouse." He shakes my hand and I get in the passenger's seat of the squad car and we go to the court house.
