The Kakamora had attacked the island of Motunui, and Moana and Maui were fighting them off.

Panic had risen, so did anger. The pair watched their backs as they fought off the bad guys. Maui sighed with relief as he watched the coconut people start to retreat. But suddenly, he saw movement from the corner of his eye. The Kakamora leader, who was on the boat, had a bow and arrow and it was pointed at Moana. Suddenly, everything seemed to go in slow motion as Maui flung himself at her. He knew he couldn't save himself.

One moment, Moana was standing in one spot. Another moment, she was in a different place.  She spotted the leader. The arrow was gone from his bow. Then she looked to the spot where she were standing a few seconds ago. Maui was there, struggling to get up. Moana quickly ran over to him. An arrow was sticking out of his side.

"Maui!" she cried as she held her friend. "Why did you do that?!"

Maui glared at Moana with the little strength he had.

"He was aiming at your head, Princess," he croaked.

"Bu-but you're a demigod!"

"Yeah, that's right, a demigod," he said, trying not to move. "FYI, Moana, but that means "half". So I would die if you tried to kill me."

Then he weakly smiled.

"You... were a good friend..."

Moana shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Don't you say that. Don't you ever say that, Maui, you hear me?! You're going to be okay... and be that same old shape-shifter ... and... and...  we'll go fishing again like we always do..."

"Nah, you do that yourself... We both know that you're better at it than me..."

Maui sighed.

"Moana, I don't want to die-"

"Maui, you're not dying!" Moana interrupted. Then she paused. "Just-just stay with me, please."

"I'll try," he mumbled. He couldn't keep his eyes fully open anymore.

Suddenly, the village medic came with his helpers. The doctor took one look at Maui and said, "We'll see what we can do."

Moana looked up to the crowd that had gathered where they were. She saw her parents and ran over to them.

"No... No..." she whispered, burying her face in her mother's shoulder as her best friend was being carried to the doctor's hut.

A few days later...

Moana was finally allowed to see Maui. His torso was covered in bandages.

"You can stay, but please don't bother him. He needs his rest. Oh, and if he wakes up, get me," the medic said.

For hours, Moana and her family all watched over the sleeping demigod. Moana fell asleep with her head on the bed, while Cheif Tui and Sina talked in low tones. Then they heard a soft cough. Everyone turned their heads to see Maui stirring.

"Get the medic, Dad," Moana said.

Tui appeared with the doctor a few minutes later.

"Maui, how are you feeling?"

"I feel like Te Ka hit me with her fiery fists," he groaned.

"Close enough," the man said. "But I won't let you out just yet. I still have to do some checkups."

The doctor paused.

"Um, were you aware you almost died?"

"Duh," he answered, rolling his eyes.

Moana laughed softly.

"He's back," she grinned, nudging her dad.

"I have to go now, but you rest well, got it?" the doctor was saying.

"Sure thing, Doc."

Moana turned to Maui.

"Don't you ever do that again," she scowled.

"What?"

"Taking an arrow, Knuckle Head! You scared me half to death!" she said, trying to seem mad, but her tear-filled eyes and small smile gave it away.

"Trust me. I won't."

Then, without any warning, Moana kissed his forehead.

"I'm glad you're ok," she smiled, squeezing his hand. Then she quietly excused herself from the room.

"Guys... She kissed me..." Maui said, a dazed look on his face.

Tui and Sina looked at each other.

"I'm going to have to talk with my daughter," smiled the Chief, a knowing sparkle in his eye.
