A New Life

I woke early that morning. Sunlight filtered through the window, bathing the room in a warm glow. Stretching, I shuffled out of bed and made my way downstairs. No one was up yet. I snorted. Didn't they know there were chores to be done? Horses to feed? They won't be sleeping for long, not while they're in my house. I grab a wooden spoon from the kitchen. Silent, I grab a metal pot from the cupboard. I pause. Still sleeping..... this is going to be fun. I begin to ram the pot with the wooden spoon, making as much noise as I could manage. "Oy! Wake up you lazy dogs!!! Come on, up you get!" I continue shouting until I hear a loud thump. Probably Emelia. Something comes down the stairs. "Ugh. Soooo tired." I giggle. "Come on Sienna, it's not that early." Sienna gives me a sarcastic look. "Holly, it's 4:15 in the morning! School doesn't start for another -" Sienna quickly counts. "Four hours and ten minutes." Three more figures slowly stumble down the stairs. " Morning!" I greet brightly. The dark haired moans. "Holly!!!!! It's soooooo early!" I giggle again. "Come on Emelia. We all know you've always been the sleepyhead!" We all giggle this time. "But seriously, the animals need feeding, the plants watered and then we should get ready for school." The two brown haired girls start talking to Sienna. "Ok, Jalena is helping me with the plants, Emelia and Sienna will take out Lassie and Scout to round the sheep and cattle and you will feed the horses." Alyssa informs us. We all nod and get to work. I run outside the house and too the barn. Feeding horses was so easy. But when you have at least thirty, it more of a two man job. "Morning guys!" I greet the horses. I walk over to a stall that says FireStar. A beautiful young, chestnut stallion stands there, his eyes on me. "Hey boy, how are you today?" I greet as I feed him. He snorts. I giggle. I continue, feeding the horses, then run back to the house to get ready for school.

"Okay, you guys ready?" Jalena asks. I quickly brush  my wig, the short, curly red hair shining in the sunlight. "Holly, what are you doing?" Emelia asks, stunned by my new look. "I just want to try it." I put in brown contacts. My face is caked with makeup, but they don't know that. "Holly, you look fine, no one is going to judge us..... at least, I hope so." Sienna tries to assure me. I sigh. It was difficult, moving to America. After getting high results in her year nine exam, Holly, Emelia, Jalena, Sienna and Alyssa moved to America for year ten. If Holly's brother Daniel, a famous historian, hadn't bought the farm in New York for them...... they would have been homeless. I wonder what home is like this time of year..... oh yeah, Australia is summer in January! "Holly! The bus is coming!!!" I hurry to the mirror to check that I look ok. "HOLLY!!!" I smile. "Coming!" I reply. A new life. A new school. And if I'm lucky, maybe even new friends!! I rush outside. Life in NYC, here I come!
