Chapter 4-

Jade's POV:

It's been three days since I read Arista's note. I'd walked by the park several times but still couldn't bring myself to go in. Today was the funeral and I wasn't sure if I wanted to go. I could hear Ace in the next room banging around in her closet looking for something to wear. I knew Aystin was probably still sitting in the living room as he'd been all morning. He hasn't been himself all week but we all knew better than to push him to talking about this.

I sighed loudly sitting on my floor. I closed my eyes trying to meditate on whether or not to go when I heard my door softly creak open. My eyes darted open and I looked to see who'd come in. It was Ace's new cat Minnie. She was adorable I'd give her that but the little patch of white on her paw on her otherwise black fur made her unique. Arista would've loved her.

"Jaydn," I heard my Mother calling from the kitchen most likely.

She'd decided to take off work to be our moral support at the funeral. I knew she did it as a good gesture but I wouldn't be taking it that way. Every since our Dad died. That was probably the last time I seen her act like a mother was at his funeral. That's a lie. She still attempted holidays and birthdays. Notice I said attempted.

"Jaydn we're leaving in ten minutes don't you think you should be getting dressed," She asked suddenly from my doorway.

I looked at Minnie who'd curled into my lap then looked up at my mother. The years since Dad had died had been rough to her. She'd let her hair start to gray and I could see dark bags beneath her eyes. I almost felt sorry for her. I probably would if she hadn't buried herself with her work. I couldn't even tell you what my Mother did for a living just that it took up more of her life than us kids did now. However much I hated her for choosing work over us she was still my Mother and I still did love her somewhere deep down inside.

"Jaydn," She said for a third time.

"Huh," I said even though I'd heard her just fine.

"Are you coming or not," She asked me as I got up and walked over to my dresser.

"Umm I guess I'll go," I said still not sure if I wanted to.

"Jade," She said putting her arm around me turning me around to face her.

I looked at her surprised. She usually hated calling me Jade even though she sometimes called Acelyn Ace.

"You don't have to put a brave face for us," She said quietly.

I looked away suddenly interested in finding my clothes.

"Can you give me a few minutes to get dressed please," I said willing my voice not to crack.

I didn't look up until I heard my door shut again. I sank down to my floor and felt myself tear up. No. I wasn't going to cry. Then I started to cry. I cried for a few minutes then heard a quiet mew. I looked down and giggled. Minnie had found her way over to me and was purring in my lap. This cat was something else.
