The hospital didn't have much excitement, until Matt started to chat up Georgia, the hot brunette nurse who worked on the floor Chelsea was on.
"Well well if it isn't Mr. Social Butterfly himself." Georgia teased Matt as he wandered back into the hall from Chelsea's room. She had seen him wandering around a few times, he kept to himself, just aimless walking around. He was a lot more social than the other guy who was usually in there.
"I like making the rounds." Matt chuckled.
"When your friend is there, we never see him unless we have to go into the room for something." Georgia replied giving Matt a sad smile. "I feel kind of bad for him, he looks so broken hearted."
Matt nodded leaning against the desk at the nurse's station. "Ian really loves her." He replied. "We just keep telling him it could have been worse."
"Tell me about it." Georgia offered another smile. "So, what's your deal? If he's her boyfriend, you're her brother?"
"No, I'm his friend. Her friend too." Matt answered.
"Do you always offer to sit around in boring places, just to keep friends happy?"
"Only if there are pretty girls to talk to." Matt blushed hearing what he'd just said. It was like he had lost complete control of his brain for two minutes and look at what happened.
Georgia giggled and smiled at him, Matt knew flirting with the nurses was wrong, but she was so cute! What else was he supposed to do? He loved Ian like a brother, but unlike Ian, Matt couldn't sit in the world's most uncomfortable chair for hours on end watching and waiting for Chelsea's condition to change. Yes, Matt wanted it to change, for the better but he just couldn't do it. He had taken to walking around the ward just to pass time.
He had been here six hours and already four different patients, two janitors, a doctor and every nurse in the area knew who he was. Matt doubted if any of them even knew Ian or had any idea who he meant when he said the curly haired guy who never left room 407. Talking with Georgia a bit more, Matt watched as she filed papers and charts chatting and never missing a beat as she worked.
"I'm on a break in ten minutes, if you want we can go get some coffee or something. If you want to stay here, then I'll understand." Georgia said looking up for a brief second from her papers.
"I should stay. In case Ian calls." Matt replied. Georgia nodded. "Actually, you know what that sounds great. I mean a few minutes won't hurt right?"
"If anything changes, I can let someone know to come get you." Georgia offered with a warm smile.
Leaving any contact information he could think of with the middle aged nurse at the desk, who was replacing Georgia's break, Matt thanked her over and over again before rushing toward the elevator to catch up. He caught up to Georgia just as the elevator doors opened and people started to shuffle on and off. It was later in the evening and the cafeteria was quiet, except a few hospital staff on a break and family and friends who were in the same position as Matt.
Ordering a coffee for her and a tea for Matt, Georgia told him that if he even thought of paying she'd snap his fingers off. Matt liked her sense of humour. Buying a couple of muffins, Matt sat down at the small table across from the girl he had been crushing on for the last several hours. Handing her a blueberry muffin he unwrapped his own and took a bite.
"So what is it you do, Matt?" Georgia asked. Taking a sip of her coffee.
"I play guitar in a band; I also have a solo project." Matt explained tapping the side of his paper cup. "It's not that thrilling really. It's how I met Ian; he's our drummer for the band."
