Lost. That would probably describe my situation best. But I've had time to adjust. Almost a year actually. A year full of a lot of traveling and desperately trying to find a way back home, a way back into my own time. I didn't belong here, but there I was, standing in New York City, only having arrived half an hour ago.
A couple of weeks back I had decided to take a break from trying to find a way back home, at least that's what I told myself. Deep down I knew I had given up but I didn't want to admit it.
Right now I was wandering the busy streets of New York, doing a bit of sightseeing actually. I would have really liked to come here when I was still in my time, but this now had to be enough, not that I could actually have changed anything. I was just going around a corner when it happened. Something was standing on the ground and I stumbled over it, falling down and hitting the ground hard. A stinging pain rushed up my right arm almost immediately.
"Oh god, I am so sorry, are You okay?" I heard a strangely familiar voice say. It wasn't familiar because I knew the person behind it, but it was familiar because the voice had a British accent, something that I hadn't heard for almost a year. Somebody was kneeling down next to me and I felt hands on my shoulders, gently pulling me up. When I looked up I saw a ginger man around thirty years old. He had freckles all over his face and his green eyes were looking worried. On the floor next to him a leather suitcase, which had fallen over when I had stumbled over it.
"Yeah...no...my arm." I said, trying to move it. At least nothing was broken, there was just a whole lot of blood. I had to fix this immediately. So without thinking twice I gripped his suitcase, my handbag and his arm and I disapparated and apparated into a small side alley. I pulled my wand out and healed the wound on my right forearm, afterwards removing the blood from my arm and clothes. My dark blue dress and black overcoat were clean again.
"You're a witch." The man stated, a small smile on his face. "Very well spotted." I said. I just couldn't stop my sarcasm. "What if I wasn't a wizard?" He said. "Then I would have had to obliviate You." I said. "How did You know I was a wizard?" He asked. I pointed at his black and yellow scarf. "Hufflepuff." I said. He looked down at himself, spotting the scarf. "Oh." He just said. There was a pause in which he looked at me. "Is there any chance You are British? You've got this faint British accent and You know what a Hufflepuff is...Just wondering." He said. I smiled at him. "Yes I am. But I haven't been home in quite a while, that's why the accent has faded a little. Also my mum was American so I grew up like this." I said. There was another pause. "Newt Scamander" the man said, holding out his hand, smiling at me. I looked at him in amazement. Of course I knew who Newt Scamander was. Everybody in my time knows that.
"Emily Gray." I said quickly, shaking his hand and smiling back. "So Ms. Gray, I usually don't ask everyone I meet on the street out for a tea but see it as an apology fot the broken bones. Would You like to have a tea with me?" He asked. He was cute, looking to the side after he had asked me. He was obviously shy. "Broken bones? I just had a little laceration on my arm." I said laughing. "Just a saying." He said, a small grin on his face. "Okay, yes, sure I'd like to have a tea with You Mr. Scamander." I said. "Do You know a place to go?" He thought for a second. Then he shook his head slightly. "Actually no. I have just arrived here." He said, blushing ever so slightly. "So did I. Let's go then, it can't be too hard to find a café." I said, pulling him out of the alley.
Around twenty minutes later we sat in a small café, drinking tea and munching on some biscuits. American biscuits though. I much preferred the British ones. "You said You just arrived here, as well. Where have You been before?" Mr. Scamander asked. "Oh I have been traveling a lot in the past year. Before I came here I spent some time in Germany. I'm part German so I thought I might travel there." I said, taking a sip of my tea. "And You?" He looked a bit uncomfortable for a second then he answered "Sudan. I have been studying...uhm..beasts."
Who would have thought. Though I had to pretend I didn't know because I simply shouldn't know. "Oh really? Beasts? How exciting." I said, hoping to sound honest. "Oh really? You think so?" He asked, really excited. "Yes, of course." I said, smiling at him. Not that I cared much about this subject when I had still been at Hogwarts but it was interesting nonetheless. He must have read my mind (not that he actually had read my mind) because he asked "You're British. So You must have gone to Hogwarts, right?" I nodded. "Of course. It was amazing." I answered thinking back to my time at Hogwarts. "In what house were You?" He asked. I smiled. "I'm quite proud to say I'm a Ravenclaw." "Oh a Ravenclaw. That's why You are giving off such an intellectual vibe." He said, smirking.
We talked for quite a while, talking about this and that, for example that he was four years older than me or where we lived before we started traveling. I obviously didn't tell him anything about me time traveling. When we walked out of the café again the sun was slowly starting to go down. Since it was almost winter the sunset was quite early in the day. "Do You have a place to stay?" Mr. Scamander asked. "Oh don't worry about me. I've got everything that I need." I said, shaking my handbag a bit. "A...handbag? But...?" He asked confused. "What would You say if I told You that I had a whole house in there?" I asked innocently. A grin started to spread over his face. "Then I'd say You're not the only one who knows how to pull of extension charms." He said, putting his other hand on his suitcase. I grinned back. "Goodbye Mr. Scamander." I said. "It was nice to have tea." "Goodbye Ms. Gray." He said.
I started walking away. "Wait a moment!" I heard him. I turned back around. "Yes?" "Uhm...How...I mean...I'd like to see You again, maybe...How can I find You?" He asked shyly, slightly blushing. Damn he was cute. I smiled. "See that bench over there? My bag will be underneath there. I will make it invisible though, so just poke around with your wand a little." I said. "Okay." He said. "See You soon." He then said, walking away.
I walked over to the bench and placed my bag in front of it. Nobody was around so I opened it and magicked myself into it (the inside of my bag was a bit smaller so I had to shrink myself just a little), afterwards magicking the bag underneath the bench, making it invisible and closing the zipper. I found myself inside of my bedroom, as always when entering it. "Home Sweet Home."
