"No. I told you and everyone else that I was not coming back."
"Don't care. They want you back.
"Well I'm not going." I say and stop in my tracks. The young female turns around and snarls at me.
"You are coming. I'm bringing you home."
"That is not my home!" I shout at her louder than I wanted to.
"That's it! I'm sick and tired of your attitude! I honestly don't even know why Rose insisted on bringing you back!" she snarls and spits the words out.
"Well if you hate me so much why didn't you kill me!" I'm furious. How dare she speak to me like this? I look up at her and she looks shocked. "Why are you staring at me like that?!" I'm leaving, if she wants to follow me she can.
 "I..."
  "Just leave me alone Nikitara."
"Don't you dare just shrug me off like that." I can hear her voice cracking.
"I'm only going to cause trouble. Isn't that what you would say?" It pains me to say it. Nikitara is one of my favorites and she means a lot to me. That's why she has to go back alone.
"I don't want you to leave." I turn around to see her ears laid back and her eyes brimmed with tears.
"Nikitara..." I walk up to her and gently put my hands on the side of her face. "Don't be upset. Please." I crouch almost into a sitting position and pull her toward me. "It's going to be okay."  We sat there on the ground, her head on my chest and my arms around her large shoulders.
The frightened child runs away from the village. He ran far out into the woods. "Mama!" the small boy cried out. The men had stopped chasing him long ago. But what scared him were the words they said.

  "Leave him for the wolves!"
Mama had always told him that the wolves were beautiful, majestic creatures. Who protected the forest and anything in it. Would they protect him though?
He kept running until his feet ached and he couldn't take another step. That night the forest was alive with sounds. He counted two owls, a few crickets, some birds, a small number of frogs, but one sound stood out to him, the cry of a wolf. He had never heard a wolf howl before and it startled him at first. But he eventually got used to it, he counted the different pitches as different wolves. "Two large males, two females, and two pups. I think."
Four long days had passed and he figured out that there were three females not two. The boy had found out where the wolves had been living, and he laid on the hill and watched them every morning. There was a large gray wolf, a large brown wolf, a white and black female, a brown female, and a black female. Oh and the two pups, one a light mouse brown and the other black.
He leans over to get a better look at the pups when he knocks a rock down the slope. "Oh no." The wolves perked up their ears and look up at him. For some reason he doesn't feel scared. The gray alpha barks to the brown male and starts toward the small child.
"Damien! Hurry up!"
"Stone..." One of the females whisper.
I can hear them. Wait. I can hear them?!
"Nikitara! Safira! Take the pups to the den!" The wolf they called Stone barked orders. The boy was impressed at Stone's leadership skills.

I wake up with a start. Nikitara is lightly snoring next to me. "Nikitara. Wake up." I say and shake her shoulder. She mumbles and falls back asleep. "Fine then, at least I can get some writing done." I say as I pull my journal out of my bag.

Date: 8-21-?
Nikitara came today. She said that the pack wanted me back. Yeah right, I don't believe that for five seconds. But I will go with her anyways because she wants me back. I'm coming home for Nikitara. My mother will be happy to see me. Rose is always happy when I'm around. I'm afraid of what Stone will say, to be honest. What if he doesn't want me back? Just the thought scares me. I respect Stone, he was like a father to me. He let me live with the pack. Stone was always very patient with me. But I've been gone for almost two years. I don't even remember what the pups looked like. I wonder about the pups a lot. Cute little Arti and Vince. They are the offspring of Safira. But only Vince took after his mother. Vince was a proud and fearless pup. While Arti loved to goof around and get into trouble. Who knows, maybe she has matured. I hope so. Anyway, enough about the pack. I went into quite a large village two days ago. But I didn't stay for longer than a few hours. I told my normal story, about the King's men. But then they started asking questions about the wolves. I didn't know what to tell anyone. But one of them said my name, and I was out of there faster than I've ever left a village before. Yes, I'm far away from there but, I am afraid that someone might tell people they shouldn't be talking to. Well I'm going to get Nikitara up so we can get going. I'm going to try to write some more later. Signing off.             -Fangsong

"Morning." Nikitara says looking at my journal.
  "Good Morning."
"So you're still writing in that old thing? She adds a snort after her sentence.
"Of course. I try to write in it every one to two days."
"Right. Well we should get going." Her words breaking between a yawn and some stretching.
"Okay. Then let's go." I slide my journal back into my bag and button it closed. "Do you know where my cloak is?" I ask looking around.
"You left it over by that spruce, stupid."
We started out on our journey when the sun was high in the sky and the forest was alive but busy. For a late breakfast Nikitara had caught a few mice and I had some dried meat from my bag, which I shared with her.
"This meat tastes weird and it's hard to chew." She said while gnawing on some dried meat.
 "Is it good or not?"
  "I guess it tastes okay."
"Alright, then shut up and eat it." I say before going back to eating my own food. Nikitara likes to watch me, but she always has. When I was younger I noticed that she would sit a distance away from me and just watch. It scared me at first but I eventually I realized that it was just something she liked to do.
  "Fangsong."
"Hm?" Hearing that name still startles me after so many years.
"Can I ask a question?" she stops eating and peers at me.
"Of course."
"Are you scared to come back to the pack?"
"Uh, what?" Oh no. How does she know?
 "Are you?"
"Kind of, I guess." I look at her paws.
"Hm. Okay." Nikitara leans forward and licks my face. "I'm glad that you're coming back." I laugh and kiss her nose. Is she though?
