Chapter 1: Last Day

The dark haze covering the near yet distance stars shrouded the entire sky. Shadows flew around, taking on shapes of dragons, ghosts, or people. It felt normal, but strange. It was hard to describe. A fiery comet shot across the sky, breaking the haze and making a stripe open up in the sky, like a zipper zooming down the stars at light speed. My thoughts were cut off when the comet made an explosion far off and engulfed the world in fire and dust. That's when I finally woke up from my dream...or nightmare.

"No! Ow! God!" I shouted as I flung myself up from my bed, sweating like the fire had actually existed and shaking in fear. I had just remembered where I was. It was a dormitory of beds and necessities, like cabinets of food and all that. Plus, I had school the next day. Yes, school. I have no idea why I chose here after last time. I guess blending in was the best way to not be exposed as a shapeshifter nor an elemental. Later on that, more on the new person who was now in front of me.

"You okay?" she asked me, standing at the edge of my bed and looking at me with curious sea blue eyes. She looked confused, but not scared, which was a surprise to me.

"Y-yeah," I replied, trying to hide my fear. "I'm...good." I didn't need her worrying about the dream I had just had. No, scratch that, nightmare I just had.

"You don't look okay," she started. "You're shaking and sweating. Be honest with me, alright?" Damn, she was a determined girl. She didn't even break a sweat while demanding an answer.

'Just a dream. Just a dream. Just a dream,' I kept telling myself. 'It isn't true, they never are.' I took a breath. "I'm fine, just a nightmare." I hoped it was enough to keep her off for now. I could tell by the look on her face that she knew I was new here, which already set the stage that this was going to be going somewhere.

"Alright then. Skylar, by the way." Feeling like this was my chance to get a friend and be normal, I jumped from my bed to her side and smiled.

"Sylena," I replied. She smiled and walked out the door, making her crimson red hair fly up as she walked off. Already, she was starting up chats with other people who had been awake. I changed my clothes really quickly, then went to go outside after seeing the coast was clear of people. I walked outside and started going down the sidewalk towards the woods when I heard a shout behind me.

"Wait, Sylena!" I turned to see Skylar running to me and skidding to a halt with no breath lost. "Just wanted to add, if you ever need me, I'll be somewhere near my bed. As for the sign, just ignore it." She smiled.

"Alright...thanks," I said. "See you later."

"Bye!" She walked back the other way, leaving me to run off past the boys dorm and to the trees, where I decided to change into a fox and explore the land. Again, I'm a shapeshifter, so why not.

The lake nearby looked small and not exciting to inspect. Plus, someone was there, gazing into it. I silently dashed off the other way behind the boys dorm and past the girls dorm, shapeshifting into a falcon to soar over the forest to the side of the school, which was by the left side of the girls dorm. Seeing nobody in sight, I landed and changed into a fox again and looked around, hoping I was hidden. It was good, for a moment.

A few seconds later, I immediately saw a short-haired wolf and jumped up to a window behind me to avoid a fight. I didn't need to be changing back and exposing myself, or coming back covered in scars and burns (Burns from my fire elemental abilities. They get out of control sometimes).

Looking at the short-haired wolf, I growled harshly in an odd way for a fox. That made the wolf run off. Turned out it was a tamed one, running to an owner who ran off with it down the pathway.

I let out a breath, turned around, and saw at least five people, including Skylar, staring at me through the window, all looking curious and casting suspicious looks at me.
