Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. – Detroit Police 2nd Precinct, Downton
"Morning sexy."
"Green."
"Come on Tracy, we're going on a date this weekend. The least you could do is call me by my first name."
I look at him and sigh, "You're right. Morning... Chase"
"You see? Was that so hard?"
"Extremely."
Green looks at me while smiling. I've never really noticed how attractive he really was; I guess I can see why so many girls in our precinct are head over heels for him. With his sharp jawline, short light brown hair and the prettiest brown eyes you'll ever see in your life.
Get yourself together Tracy, you're only using him to make Harry jealous
"You okay Montgomery? You look a bit flustered," he smirks and runs his hand through his hair.
God, he's beautiful.
"Yeah... just thinking about stuff."
"Like how I look naked? Don't worry, you'll find out Saturday night."
He winks at me and laughs, I can feel my face going bright red. Before I could come up with a witty comeback, we're interrupted by a soft buzzing noise coming from his pocket.
"Are you going to get that?"
"Huh? Oh, that's my phone, I thought it was yours."
He takes his phone out of his pocket and checks the caller ID, suddenly getting very nervous out of nowhere.
"You okay Green? Who is it?"
"No one you know; excuse me I have to take this."
Green quickly walks out of the precinct, almost knocking everyone in his way over.
"That was weird..."
I decide to get up and follow him, making sure I'm well out of his sight. I've never seen him act up like this before, something must be up and I'm going to get to the bottom of it. I follow Green onto the streets of Detroit and see a worrisome look on his face. Green turns the corner into a shady looking alley. I get behind a corner and try to hear what I can of his conversation.
"Listen, just keep her mouth shut. If someone hears her screaming it'll raise suspicion."
He pauses as he listens to what the person on the phone is saying, who the hell could he be talking to? Who's screaming?
"Just. Shut. Her. Up."
He hangs up the phone and rubs the temples of his forehead. He looks at the wall for a minute and then punches it.
"Fuck!"
He cradles his hand and hits the wall with his foot. What could've gotten him so angry? Something's going on here but what is it? I see he is about to turn around so I quickly get out of there and head back to the precinct.
"Where the hell did you go?"
I look up from the ground and see Captain glaring right at me.
"You and Green got what will probably be the most important call of your case and neither of you were here to pick it up. Where. Were. You."
"I went go to get some fresh air Captain. I'm sorry."
The Captain looks around to see if anyone is watching and sighs. She places a hand on my shoulder and looks at me sadly.
"I get you're going through a rough time, but you cannot let your personal life interfere with your career life. I'll send you the details of the call through email. Don't let it happen again."
"I won't Captain. Thank you."
I head back to my desk and log into the system. Green still hasn't come into the precinct, where the hell could he have gone? What was that phone call about? He's got me worrying about him and I never knew he could ever do that.
Focus on your work Tracy.
I sigh and log into my email, opening up what the Captain sent me.
"34 Marco St, that's near the abandoned orphanage. Why would there be shouting at the abandoned orphanage?"
"I'll go and check it out. Don't you worry about it Montgomery."
I look behind me and see Green standing there and reading the email.
"Green, I didn't see you come back in. Where'd you go?"
"I just went to get some fresh air after that phone call."
"Oh... is everything alright?"
"Peachy."
Green grabs the car keys off of my desk and gets his badge and gun ready. He's never wanted to go by himself, so why start now?
"Are you sure you don't want me to go with you? That area of Detroit is pretty sketchy. You could need backup."
"Don't worry about me sugar. I'll be fine." He winks at me and walks off.
72 Connor Street, 5:30 p.m.
I walk into my home to see Lindsey and Harry on the couch together. They were sitting a little close, too close for comfort. Lindsey's hand was casually resting on Harry's left thigh; Harry looks like he had just been crying.
"Hey guys, what are you doing here?"
Lindsey looks at Harry and then looks directly at me, "You might want to take a seat Trace."
This is serious. Lindsey has never looked this serious before in her life. I suddenly get this sinking feeling in my stomach, something must really be wrong. My legs start to shake so I immediately take a seat, rubbing my hands against my thighs. I'm so worried.
Harry looks at me and takes a deep breath, "The kids... The Phantom took them after school."
My heart stops beating.
Not my beautiful angels. God they were such good children, they never got into cars with strangers nor did they ever get into trouble. I don't understand it. I start to feel my tears flow strong and steady like a river, I can't stop myself.
"Oh Tracy..." Harry gets up and wraps his strong arms around me.
"It's all my fault. If I had just taken off the whole week like you said they would still be here."
"Tracy this is not your fault. You have to earn your living somehow."
Harry kisses my forehead and moves my hair out of my face. His piercing brown eyes are staring into mine intently and deeply. Just like they used to.
"Harry, I promise you I'm going to find our kids. Even if it's the last thing I do. I'm going to cancel my date on Saturday and just spend the whole day looking for our babies."
"Date? You had a date?"
Harry lets go of me and backs away, looking at me as if I betrayed his trust.
"Yes I had a date. You're not the only one who's allowed to move on Harry."
"I... I have to go."
Harry grabs his jacket and storms out the house, making sure to slam the door behind him. Lindsey gets up and replaces his spot, wrapping her arms around me to comfort me.
"Everything will be okay Tracy, I promise."
