Prologue
Today is the day that most teens in Brentwood High have been waiting for. Which day might you ask? The last day of school, of course!
In just a few, short seconds, the school corridors and parking lot will be flooded with students, all hopeful for a summer they won't forget.
“Alicia!” I heard a familiar squeaky, utterly annoying voice shout.
“Oh, Hey Rachel, what’s up?” I replied in bored tones.
Her glossy, long blonde hair was swaying from left to right like she was in a salon commercial! I despised this girl so very much. She was the reason for my break-up, with the heart throb that is Jack Adams. We were doing just fine, until little miss ‘My-daddy’s-rich-and-I’m-beautiful’ transferred to our school.
I, being the Good Samaritan that I most definitely was, invited her to hang out and have lunch Jack and I, seeing as she was new. For the next 2 weeks I had to endure her, rubbing her man-stealing paws all over my boyfriend, until he decided to drop the bombshell, “It’s not you, babe. It’s me”, I mean, wow. Couldn’t he have been a little bit creative with his break-up lines? Jerk.
The very next day, what do you know? Jack and Rachel suddenly realised they were “so alike and perfect for each other”, that is, until he moved to the other side of the country with his parents.
I couldn’t help but laugh when this piece of oh so interesting knowledge was brought to my attention.
“Isn’t it great? Schools out for the WHOLE Summer! I can’t wait to get home and make plans with my girlfriends!” she replied, slightly louder and more enthusiastic than I could handle.
“Oh, um... Yeah. Just great, bye Rachel” I said, hoping we were done conversing for the rest of the summer.
As I walked away, I quickened my pace, hoping that she wouldn’t match it, and get the picture that I really didn’t want to be in the-worlds-most-awkward-conversation-with-mega-bitch-of-the-CENTURY.
You see, the thing I despise the most about Rachel is, she pretends to like you, and even try to be your friend, but in reality.. She probably dislikes you more than you dislike her. She is, without a doubt the world’s most fake human being to ever exist. She would charm you into a friendship with her cute stories about ‘back home’ or, my personal favourite “you seem like a really cool person, and oh.my.gosh! You’re so pretty”
Now I think about it, I can honestly see why Jack chose Little-miss-beautiful-shit-head over me. She has gorgeous long blonde locks, has the most piercing blue eyes I’ve ever seen, has a body that could only be described as ‘Sculpted by the Gods’ and, a freaking ‘Hollywood Smile’, whereas I have dark brown, frizzy hair that could only be described as ‘A frizzy mess’, mediocre green eyes, and an ‘ok’ smile, I won’t even get onto the subject of my body. My friends say that I’m ‘voluptuous’ and ‘curvy’, personally, I just think they’re indirectly calling me fat, but Hey! That’s just me.
Much to my dismay, her pace quickened to match mine, why couldn’t this bitch just get the picture and leave me the heck alone!
“So, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out tonight at the beach, it’s just a few people from school. Penn said that he would bring his guitar, Jackson is providing the marshmallows and I’ll be bringing the alcohol” she said at such a fast pace, it took me a second to understand what in earth she was babbling about.
“Hmm, Penn she says? I wonder if she just said that to allure me into her ‘let’s be best friends’ trap, again. No, she wouldn’t? Would she? I mean, she doesn’t actually know that I think Penn is the most gorgeous guy I’ve ever seen, and I have the biggest crush on him.” I silently debated with myself.
What I then said shocked both me and Rachel; I didn’t mean to answer her question quite so nicely, and in an excited manor.
“Yeah, I’d love to! I mean, I haven’t been to the beach for a while, and I feel like getting soooo wasted!”
“Oh no, why did I say that?” I thought to myself. “Well done, Alicia. If she didn’t think you were a loser before that statement, she definitely does now!” I then scolded myself silently.
“That’s great! I heard Elliott Bowman and Tom Lanter are going too, now is my time, if you get what I mean” she said, whilst winking. Elliott and Tom were practically school royalty. Every girl wants to be the girlfriend of Tom or Elliott.
I, on the other hand, don’t think that they are hot, or sexy, or any other word with such meaning. The 3 of us have known each other for our whole lives. Our moms are practically inseparable so I see the pair of them at least 4 times a week, out of school.
“Oh, um, yeah. They mentioned it to me at lunch. They both have dates though, so tonight probably won’t be ‘your time’” I replied, in a more malicious tone than intended.
“Right, I should have known. Stupid me, I feel like a total fool now. Gosh Rachel! Why are you such an idiot?” she then said. I wasn’t sure if she was talking to herself or me, but what I then said was instantly regretted. If I could have changed my words, I would.
“Hey, don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s just one of those things really. If you want, you can get ready at my place. My parents are having dinner with Mr and Mrs Bowman tonight, so I have the place to myself. We can have a couple of drinks before going, if you’d like”
The embarrassed expression her face previously held suddenly changed to a shocked one, then a questioning, suspicious one, to a happy, almost too happy one.
“Really? Are you sure that would be ok? I mean, I don’t want to impose or anything.” She cheerfully said.
“Totally, just come over around 6 and we can hand and get ready” I replied, with inner hatred for my stupid loud mouth.
“Great, see you then.” And with that, she turned on her fancy-Italian-designer-hells and walked away, with an obnoxious spring in her step.
“And the award for the biggest loser, big mouth of the year goes to Alicia Badgeley” I mutter to myself as I walked to my old, almost rusty beat-up Toyota.
Just as I thought my day couldn’t get any worse, I was tapped on my shoulder.
Almost jumping out of my skin, I turned to see who the intruder-of-personal-space was, and why they were touching me.
