An hour later, the interrogations ended and us trainees were all told to be in the training center at 6am tomorrow morning. Derrick mentioned something about breakfast, but I barely noticed because I was too anxious to get back to my room.
As soon as I closed my door behind me, I let out a sigh of relief. It had been unnerving to hear the truth being forced from people's mouths for over an hour.
My suitcases were, as promised, situated next to my bed. I heaved one up onto my bed and unzipped it, anxious to unpack.
As I was about to dive into the process, my door was slammed open and Hazel walked calmly into the room.
"I thought I locked that," I said inquisitively as she sat down on the bed. "And I thought you knew I could pick locks. Guess we both were wrong," she said casually.
I continued to unpack, with Hazel's eyes following my every move. "Who's this?" Hazel said as she snatched a photo of Ian and I out of my hands.
"That's my friend Ian," I said quickly, reaching to take it back. Hazel leaned the other way, still taking her time to examine it.
"He's cute. Just a friend?"
"Yes, just a friend. Can I have that back now please?" I said, this time with a small smile on my face.
"Sure, sure. Oh wow, you've got lots of pictures don't you," she said as she looked through my suitcase.
"Just a few of my family and friends. Nothing much, really," I said as I arranged my makeup brushes on my desk. "Sometimes I wish I had a family," Hazel mused. "A real one, like yours. My parents were both assholes."
"I'm sorry," I said lamely, and Hazel shrugged.
"It's no big deal. Anyways, you excited for tomorrow?""Kind of. What about you?" "Yep. This place is like a dream come true," she said as she leaned back on my bed, arms stretched behind her head.
"But enough chat. I've got a serious question for you now," Hazel said with a voice almost as emotionless as Derrick's.
"Yes?" "Are you gonna call dibs on that Theo guy, or am I free to make a move?" She said, and I laughed.
"That's your serious question?" "Of course! He's hot as hell, but I'm not going to be the one standing in your way if you wanna go for him," she said matter-of-factly.
"I can't believe that with all that's happened in the last four hours, THIS is what you think is the most important." "Of course it is! And let me clarify, if you say Theo is off limits, that is A-Okay. All the guys here seem adequately attractive, so I'll be fine," she said simply.
By this time I was doubled over laughing, my unpacking momentarily forgotten.
Hazel rolled her eyes. "Oh come on, don't tell me you aren't attracted to him. You even said that 'the other hot brunette' was the most attractive one in the room!"
"Who says I was talking about him?" I retorted.
"There were plenty of brunettes in the room. I would know, I saw them--""--but Theo is the hottest brunette in the room, therefore I made an assumption," she said. "Now is he off limits or not?"
