"Hullo Evans." James whispered, suddenly appearing next to her. His tousled black hair tickled the back of her neck. She could smell wet grass, rain, and the distinctly woody smell of a broomstick handle. Lily tensed, scooting abruptly away from the table.
"Bloody git," she retorted, glaring at him.
"Is that any way to treat your new lab partner?" James grinned, his hazel eyes sparkling with amusement.
Lily rolled her eyes. "Go get 7 frozen Ashwinder eggs, a handful of rose thorns, 5 peppermint leaves, 1/3 lb of powdered moonstone, a dash pearl dust." she instructed, shooing him away.
James dramatically placed his hand over his heart. "Not even a 'Hello James' and you are already sending me off? I'm offended."
"Very mature Potter."
"That's still not a hello."
Lily bit her lip, avoiding his eyes. "Hello Potter. Satisfied?"
"Not quite!" He replied with a wink. "But we can work on it later."
Lily shook her head, "You get the ingredients while I prepare everything else."
James saluted mockingly before swaggering over to the ingredients cabinet.
Lily closed her eyes and took a deep breath, replacing the smell of James with the comforting aroma of fresh parchment.
"Everything you requested Evans," James grinned, piling everything on the table.
Her eyes flew open and her face heated, quickly catching up to the shade of her fiery red hair.
"I saw you and Sirius whispering quite fiercely while you were getting the ingredients. What was that all about?" Lily responded, attempting to divert attention away from her flaming face.
"Er... we were just helping each other find the ingredients..." James choked, and it was his turn to blush. His face burned as he remembered all the remarks Sirius had been making about "Lily flower and Jamesie-poo".
"Are you okay?" Lily asked, raising her eyebrows.
James cleared his throat. "Umm... let's get to work!"
