Hatter entered the throne room with Alice by his side. "Your Majesty," he bowed low, taking off his hat.
"Hatter! I was not expecting you in court today. I thought you'd be busy with your new orders."
"I was, but an unexpected guest changed my plans." He smiled, giving way to Alice step forward. She took a few steps toward the White Queen, stopped, and curtsied "Your Majesty."
"Alice!! What a pleasant surprise! Please step forward, I remember you being a bit bigger last time." she said, comparing Alice's size with the shining armor standing next to the throne.
"Indeed, I had to be shrunken to pass through the door at the portal, and I could not find any Upelkuchen ever since to bring me back to my normal size."
"I see; indeed there are any left" Mirana exchanged a meaningful look with the Hatter. "We had a little problem with them a while ago, and I had to banish them from the kingdom."
"What happened?"
"It's a long story, dear." the queen started, "Please have a seat by my side."
"Your Majesty," the Hatter interrupted, "please excuse me, I will be in the garden in case I'm needed. Fairfarren" He bowed again and left the two women alone.
Alice climbed the chair next to the throne and sat beside the queen.
"I believe you remember well the Frabjous day, when you kindly risked your life to save us all. And I must add that I will be forever grateful for that." The White Queen smiled at Alice. "You probably also remember that, on that very day, my sister, the Red Queen, was banished from our kingdom on the company of Stayne, the Knave of Hearts."
Alice nodded. "How could I forget that dreadful scene, when the Red Knight tried to kill the Red Queen in front of us all. If the Hatter didn't interfere, she would be dead by now. And I also remember Stayne pleading for death... saying that he'd rather die than be forced to spend his life bonded to the Red Queen." Alice shook her head. "No one deserves such a betrayal, not even her."
Mirana smiled at Alice. "You have a kind heart, my dear. So, as you can imagine, my sister did not embrace her fate gladly. Year after year, she planned a different coup against me, recruiting the evilest creatures from other lands, plotting, and doing harm. Most attempts were not successful, but once," she shook her head slowly, closing her eyes for a second, "she almost achieved her objective."
Alice kept her eyes fixed on the White Queen listening attentively as she continued:
"She remembered well your apparition at her castle as "Um," and it was not difficult for her to put two and two together and figure out that Upelkuchen could be used not only to restore beings to their normal sizes but also to increase their sizes several times. So, she decided to turn the cake into a weapon. Actually, she used Upelkuchen to turn herself into a weapon. It was an atrocious scene; I don't know how much did she eat, but she became a monster, five times bigger than the Jabberwocky! Her head became a colossal monstrous globe. She got rid of the chains that bound her to Stayne, and stepped on him, crushing him under her feet."
Mirana shook her head with a sad look on her face. "I believe she never forgave him for what he did to her. My sister has a stubborn heart. She might have loved him in her own twisted way, but after his betrayal, revenge was that remained in her heart. The Red Knight did not survive that day. He finally embraced death as he so wished. After that, she marched to Marmoreal to claim back the crown."
Alice covered her mouth and nose with her hands, imagining the horrifying scene the White Queen was describing. "What a terrible thing! How could you defend yourselves?"
