Rapid beating, obstructing his ability to listen to the sounds around him. Rapid beating of his heart, pulsing fear through his veins and vibrating shock into his mind.

Is this shock? Is this fear? He's too numb to configure the feelings, to understand the reaction of his body. The dark horizon served only as a morbid reminder of the day that had passed. The screams of mothers and their children were replaying in his head like a broken record. The smell of charred wood and the burning bushes...he did not know what to make of it all.

His eyes burned and watered due to the massive amount of smoke choking the air, yet he looked on despite it He looked past the shriveled grass, past the burned trees and past the dead bodies that lay stiff on the ground.

He looked at the sunset like it was the only thing he was capable of. The cloak that once resembled dignified courage billowed weakly behind him, becoming yet another sound he could not hear. All he heard were screams and cries, and women pleading, and children whimpering...terrified and crouching in the corner in an attempt to escape their eminent death: the death that was excruciatingly undeniable.

He had no feelings. He had no concern. The truth was, shock had replaced it all. The possessive terror that would soon cling desperately to him...it was not in that moment. It would wait. It would lurk. Until then, he was a numb human vessel...if indeed he was still a human. He didn't even have that to hold onto. He knew only that he had to leave that place: leave behind the memories of the solemn town he used to call home. And so step by step, the grass crunching beneath his blood soaked boots, Jayce left, looking back not another time.

"You deserted your humanity, remember? You transformed into the monster the whole world thought you were."

"Those deaths...so many deaths..."

"You should have stayed home with the old man. A good life you might have lived. A bad decision cost more than your own life."

"I remember..."

"Not even Alek can save you now."

"Alek...Alek..."
