A.N- this chapter is how I met my girlfriend, and the night before I asked her out, enjoy
I remember this day so well. It was the 10th of July, 2010. We were over from America to visit my cousins in the village they lived in, Inchbare, it's in the Scottish countryside. We were going to be there for a couple months.
Besides them, there were no kids. At least that's what I thought at first.
Levi Laine and I were 7, we were very
close.we went for a walk in the woods. "Race you to the tree!" Levi ran ahead of Laine and I. "No fair! Come on Luke! Let's get him!" Laine ran after him and they disappeared into the woods.
I didn't think much of it at first, but soon realised, these woods were unknown territory for me. I couldn't see or hear Laine and Levi, which meant I had lost my only way of navigating the woods. The one thing I did know, was that the house was to the west, and the sun rises in the east.... it's midday so I should be able to see the sun.
But I couldn't see it. All I saw were the treetops. I began to panic. What if I never find my way home? What if I'm stuck alone in the woods for the rest of my life? I thought.
I decided to keep walking. I wasn't scared though.
Ok, last time I told someone this story my girlfriend just laughed when I said that part. "No, you're right, you weren't scared, you were absolutely petrified!" She had said. I love her but she's a pain in my ass.
I walked a couple hundred meters before I heard a rustling sound.
I spun around but saw nothing but trees, old fallen leaves that hadn't yet withered away, and berry bushes.
Berry bushes.....
I decided to go over and pick some. They were small, red, and round. I rolled one between my thumb and forefinger, debating whether to eat it or not.
I decided to eat it. Just as I was about to pop it in my mouth, someone spoke.
"I wouldn't eat that if I were you." I heard a girl laugh. I stopped and turned around. I was now looking at a girl, about my age, hanging by her knees, from a tree branch. She had dark brown hair, almost black. Her eyes were a hazel-green sort of colour.
"Why?" I asked her. She giggled. "Because if you eat it-" she swung her arms up, grabbed hold of the and let her knees drop from the branch, and carefully jumped to the ground. "It'll kill you. It's a bad berry, my dad has a book about what berries you can and cant eat, you can't eat those." She explained.
"You're not from here are you?" She smiled as she walked over to me. "No, I'm from San Fran. You're not from here either, your accent is a little different." I stated.
"Well, I'm from this country, but I'm from Fife, I don't live here. I'm just visiting my dad and my brothers." She clarified.
I was a weird kid, I was more observant than most my age. I noticed how she had pale pink lipstick on, and mascara. Which was odd for a 7 year old. She had a few freckles on her nose, and the cutest dimples ever (if she heard me say that now, she'd kill me).
"Why are you wearing makeup?" I asked her. "I'm not. Why would you think that?" She looked confused. She tilted her head sideways.
"Mascara..... I've never seen anyone with eyelashes that dark and straight without it. And lipstick, you've got to have some on." I said shyly.
