Why would they want to make everyone perfect? Why would the government even think about advancing this experiment? Only one person could answer my questions and I haven’t even met the man. I walked to the secretary, “Who is running this entire place?”

“The government of course,” she replies as if I am stupid.

“No, I mean, the man or woman controlling and overseeing the experiments.”

“Oh, why would you like to know?” she asks me, suspiciously. My heart starts beating fast, and I need to think of a lie, quick.

“Oh, I just thought I could talk to him about his work, I’m curious to find out why my mother did what she did,” I don’t think that lie was good enough, but it’s all I’ve got.

She hesitates for a moment, “His name is Alexander Hemings, and you didn’t hear that from me.”

“Where could I find him?” She instructs me to go to the top floor of the compound, the fourteenth floor. I go up the elevator and take deep breaths to calm my fast-beating heart. Hemings. My father? Was his name even Alexander? The elevator dings and the doors slide open. I step off the elevator and I face a set of white double doors. No security, that’s strange. I open the doors to reveal a man sitting at his desk, smiling at me. “Father,” I say breathlessly.

“Calista, my dear. I was wondering when you would come up here and find me,” he stands up and walks over to me, arms outstretched as if he’s expecting a hug. I stare at him bewildered, his smile falters for a moment as his hands drop to his sides. “So, how are you liking the compound? Beautiful, isn’t it?”

“What are you doing here?” I take a step back.

“I run the compound and everything in it, dear,” his sickening smile doesn’t falter.

“Why am I here?” I say, feeling small.

“Cal, I’ve missed you.”

I raise my eyebrows at him, incredulously, “Missed me? If you missed me then why haven’t I heard from you since I was five, when you left me and mom?” I was on the verge of tears.

“Cali, dear, I’m sorry. I really tried to mend things with your mother so I could come visit you.” He look sincere.

“What happened between you and mom?” my voice cracking.

“We just, weren’t compatible. We weren’t perfect together. There were a lot of fights baby, we decided to separate. Your mother, she hated me after that and didn’t want to see me. Even if that meant never seeing you again and leaving you fatherless.”

The tears spilled over, I ran to my father and hugged him, “I thought I was alone,” I sobbed.

“It’s okay, daddy’s here now.” We spent the rest of the time together talking and getting to know each other. It’s strange having to get to know your father and judging what kind of person he is. I found out he didn’t remarry after my mom, instead he spent his time in the compound, conducting experiments. He told me he wanted a world with peace and no heartache, a world where everyone was happy, and the only way to achieve that is to have perfect people. Perfect people mean a perfect society which leads to a perfect world. It was beautiful really, it was a nice thought, but it was sick. It was nice to have my dad with me, though. He asked me participate in one of the milder experiments, where the worst that could happen is naseau for a few days. I agreed.
