A tall, burly man with a long, full beard and curly hair stood on the platform. "All right, yeh first years, come along," he called, and a sea of first years followed behind him. "Don't' try an'stray, or yeh'll miss yer sorting." The kids followed as quickly as they could.
"He's extremely tall," Amber whispered to McKenna. She nodded, still following the sea of first years behind the tall man.
"Of course he's tall, he's Hagrid! Excuse me, Professor Hagrid," She corrected them.
"He's a professor?" Hannah chuckled "What does he teach, The 'Muddying charms'?" Amber bristled.
"Of course not, he teaches Animal charms and bonding. Honestly, do you know none of the classes?" she hissed. Professor Hagrid quieted them down with a wave of his hand. He kept on until they reached the stone doorway of Hogwarts.
Inside, Headmistress McGonagall was explaining to the children what they were about to do. "All right, once you enter the great hall, you will be sorted into your houses. There are four. Slytherin," Hannah put on a sly smile. "Gryffindor, Ravenclaw," McKenna smiled brightly."And Hufflepuff," She straightened her glasses and let them inside. "Go on, hurry," she urged. "We can not keep the sorting hat waiting."
On a stool at the front of the room was a patched-up old wizard's hat. "Alright, students," professor McGonagall announced. "Once I call your name, you will come up and I will put the sorting hat on your head. Allistair, Elizabeth." A girl with light brown hair to her waist was heading up to the stool. The sorting hat thought for a while then settled on a decision.
"Ravenclaw!" it called and everyone at the Ravenclaw table cheered. McGonagall went on, student by student, until she reached L."Lovegood, McKenna,"McKenna kipped up to the stool and placed her hand to her side. McGonagall placed the patchy hat on her head.
"Hmm, lots of courage, but a great mind too... where to put you?" Mckenna listened to the voice whispering to her. "Aha!" it said finally. "I'll put you in Gryffindor!" McKenna was appalled, nevermind the roaring cheers from the Gryffindor table. She trudged over reluctantly, suddenly feeling more accepted.
"Malfoy, Hannah," Many Slytherins clapped at the name but many of the room stayed quiet. Within second of it being placed on her head, it made no hesitation with its decision.
"Slytherin!" it called. Thundering cheers boomed from the Slytherin table and Mckenna watched as the newly appointed Slytherin walked over.
"Weasley, Amber," Amber walked up, a bit nervous by all the pairs of eyes staring at her. The sorting hat made no haste in sorting her out.
"Hufflepuff!" Amber smiled the broadest smile she could and skipped over to the Hufflepuff table.
"Weasley, Lucy." Lucy hastily walked up to the stool as the crowd waited for one of the last first years to go. The hat was placed on her head and discussed with her in the same whispering voice that McKenna had heard.
"Ravenclaw!" it yelled finally. McKenna let out an audible gasp.
"What's with you?" a fourth year asked looking puzzled.
"I wanted to please my mother by being a Ravenclaw. She was in that house, you know." another fourth year spoke up.
"Well i'm sure your parents would be proud either way." She comforted. McKenna smiled.
"Thank you."
"You better get on!" a sixth year called. "The feast is about to start." McGonagall tapped on a silver goblet with a spoon.
"Students!" she called, her voice echoing through the hall. "Today we celebrate another year at Hogwarts. For some, it's your first," the first years blushed. "For some your second, third, etc. We are here to celebrate you all with a wondrous feast." Place setting appeared in front of the students. Drinks poured themselves into goblets and food appeared on the plates.
"Wow!" McKenna gasped. The female fourth year suddenly responded.
"I know. I'm still fascinated by it. I', Megan Goodheart." McKenna smiled.
"McKenna Lovegood." Megan gasped.
"You're Luna's daughter? No wonder you wanted to be in Ravenclaw."
"Every wizard and witch wants to be in the same house as their parents," a fourth year boy complained.
"Oh shut up, Charles," Megan snarled.
"Charles Lee. Fourth year Gryffindor," She whispered.
"I hear you talking about me!" he yelled, taunting her.
"Shut up, Charles," she said in the same taunting voice. McKenna laughed at the student's petty argument.
The feast soon ended and the students all looked as Headmistress McGonagall started to say a closing announcement.
"I expect you all to go to your dormitories after I give you your common room passwords. She strode over to each table and lastly stopped at Gryffindor. "Your password is, 'Cabbage leaves'." Many of them didn't argue. Charles looked back at the first years.
"Get ready for your first hectic day at Hogwarts." he smirked.
