3rd person pov... 16 years before How To Train Your Dragon one
Three Night Furies are in a dim cave in a volcano off the east coast of Berk.

They are all silent in regard.
A Night Fury Cub had just died.

Then, a big storm rolls in, adding to the depressed mood.
Then, a loud roar scares the mother of the child.
She walks to the door, head down and paws dragging.

You see, there is a reason no one find Night Fury eggs.
They don't lay them.

Like bats, their close relatives, they have live children unless the season is particularly rough.
This particular group were royalty, though.

The male, the mate to the mother, was the alpha.

The alpha felt disgraced and rejected.
The mother felt worse.
They couldn't feed everyone.

They simply didn't want to raid, but now Alpha Kcaj saw it was necessary.

The mate roars in suprise as a big, black, blur drops something at her door step.

She takes a step back.
A familiar coo echoes through the broken home.

A happy Night Fury coo.

It sounds like a cat purring against a growling dog.

The mother scoops it up.
She cries, "A Mega Alpha he Fury dropped it! He gave it to us! Look, he even has the trademark black shell of the Mega Alpha! Kcaj, please let me keep this one! I can nurse him until we can feed him right!"

Kcaj looks at the dead body, and the doctor, a Snapplefang, takes it away.

He shudders, and nods.
He snarls to the Snapplefang, "Tell no one."
He nods, and takes off.

The egg rocks.
She smiles.
Here, in her paws, was the child she never had.

Yes, this little one would never replace her own.
Yet, it would shield the others.
She could tell it would keep everyone safe one day.

It was special, in her eyes.
She was sure of it.

So sure, she gave it a name before it was born.

This is a very bad omen, by the way.

She named it in a language she learnt from humans in a strange country called Germany.

She named him Zahnlos.
Translation?
Toothless.

To a dragon, that name is held special.

It is the name of the first Night Fury alpha.
