"So why did you leave? The church I mean?"

"Has anyone ever told you the story of the man in the well?" The old man asked the younger man that stood next to him in line.

"Nope, that a Bible story?" The younger man asked.

The old man shook his head before beginning "So, a man goes to the well to fetch water. As he pulls up the bucket, it gets lodged against one of the rocks in the well, so the man reaches in and tries to free the pale. As he reaches in, he falls and tumbles all the way down. He breaks his leg as he falls and he is to injured to climb out. So he cries out for help, but no one hears him. So a few days pass and the villagers come looking for him. They sneer at the man and walk away and tell the man to pull himself out of the well as people in the past have done. Then man sits back and wails in despair. A few more days pass and the villagers return to see the man still in the pit. The mayor decides to foreclose the well, and they cover the well in planks, leaving the man inside." The old man said.

"And?" The younger man asked.

"That's the story."

"That's not a story; it doesn't have an ending. What happens to the man?" The young man said.

"I don't know how the story ends. "

"What do you mean you don't know how it ends? Why would you start a story you don't know the ending to?" The young man said putting his phone away.

"No one knows how the story ends."

"What do you mean? That doesn't make a damn bit of sense."

"No one knows how the story ends because the villagers never went back to see the man."

"So he died in the well?"

The old man shrugged "Maybe you should go to the well and check." the old man said walking away.

"The hell is that supposed to mean?"

The old man stopped and sighed. "It's why I left."

"You left because of a story?"

"No, sometimes bad things happen for whatever reason, and you're forced to go away for a while and if no one comes looking for you then maybe it's best not to come back at all."
