Ryan's POV
I watch as my little sister, Haley, plays on the playground. I smile at the sight of her swinging and sliding down the slides. But it hurts to see that she plays all alone. Haley and I have been on the streets for years. Our parents died when Haley turned two. We were adopted for a short period of time, but things weren't going to well, so we ran away. And now, I try my best to take care of Haley....so she can be happy. I look up at the sky, and notice that it's almost dark. I need to find something for Haley to eat before sundown. I search through my pocket, and find three dollars and some change. Hopefully, this is enough to get her something. I get up from the park bench, and walk over to Haley.
" Come on Haley bunny! It's time to go.", I say with a smile. She loves when I call her Haley bunny.
" Aww, do we have to go now?"
" Yes Haley bunny, we do. But I promise I'll bring you back. So you can play all day! Okay?"
" Okay!"
" Good, now let's go get you something to eat. Are you hungry?"
" I'm starving!!"
I laugh. " Well let's go then!!"
Haley and I walk hand in hand, to the burger joint down the street. We go inside, and sit at a booth. Soon, a waitress comes over, and Haley tells her what she would like to eat. Of course she orders fries. That's what Haley loves the most. When her food is brought to the table, she offers me some.
" Oh, no Haley bunny. I'm okay. You just enjoy your fries." Haley smiles and continues to eat. When she finishes her food, we leave the diner, and walk down the nearby alley where we sleep. Luckily, someone threw out an old mattress so Haley and I have something to sleep on. We both snuggle each other for warmth and comfort. Once we make it down the alley, Haley and I sit down on the mattress.
" Well Haley bunny, since we've ran out of money, tommorow, were going to search for some food. So we should get some rest". I take of my jacket, and place it over Haley.
" Ryan?"
" Yeah?"
" Can you sing to me again?"
I smile and reply, " Of course Haley bunny. What would you like me to sing?" She looks into my eyes.
" Man In the Mirror. That's our favorite".
" Okay". I smile again and begin to sing softly in her ear. That gets her to sleep quicker.
"I'm Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It's Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .
As I, Turn Up The Collar On My
Favourite Winter Coat
This Wind Is Blowin' My Mind
I See The Kids In The Street,
With Not Enough To Eat
Who Am I, To Be Blind?
Pretending Not To See
Their Needs
A Summer's Disregard,
A Broken Bottle Top
And A One Man's Soul
They Follow Each Other On
The Wind Ya' Know
'Cause They Got Nowhere
To Go
That's Why I Want You To
Know
I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
I'm Asking Him To Change
His ways"
Before I could really get into the song, Haley was fast asleep. I softly kissed her forehead and laid next to her.
" Good night Haley bunny, I love you". I kiss her once more, and I slowly drift off to sleep.
