Your mother always said that your heart would beat for your one and only when you'd turn sixteen. You never really believed it, though. You believed you'd be happier with the most simple things in life, like friends, music, and, of course, family. But that was until the few confusing days after your sixteenth birthday. Everything had happened in a span of three days. Three confusing and heart wrenching days. The first day after your birthday, you could hear your heart beat like it was the only thing in the room. No matter how loud the mower outside was or how loud your mother was yelling at you to clean your room, your heart was louder. It was so deafening, you couldn't hear yourself think. You'd never felt this way before. What was this crazy feeling?
The second day was even worse. You'd awaken with a heavy feeling in your chest. Was it sadness? You didn't know. Whatever it was, it was heavy... Too heavy. Like carrying a burden for god knows how long. It stayed there all day – the heavy feeling. You wanted to cry. You wanted to be held... but no one felt right. It didn't feel right to be held by everyone around you. Not even your mother whom you confided in all the time. For the second time that week, you'd fallen asleep confused, hoping for a better day tomorrow.
The third day didn't start off weird, which in all reality, made you happy. Well, you'd been happy just a tad bit early. You were sitting in your room, writing an essay which was due in about twelve hours, you could do this though, you always did. There was nothing but silence in the house as you were the only one home. So, after thinking for a little bit, you decided to put on some music. 'I guess Justin Bieber will do.' you thought. You sat on your bed, tapping your foot and singing along. You were happy. But before you knew it, the heart pounding and chest crushing feelings came back with something new. A voice. It was unrecognisable. You thought you were going insane.
'Where are you? W-who are you? I just- I need to find you. But you're feeling happy right now, I can feel it.' you covered your mouth and started to tear up, 'Oh. Oh god, you can hear me. I- I made you upset! Damn it, you had one job, Shawn.'
You'd finally figured out what was happening. The pounding in your chest was the awakening of finding your true love. The heavy feeling was his burden that he would never find you. And now? It's him. Could he hear you too?
'I wish I could hear you...' That answered you question, directly, 'Well, see you. I've been waiting for this to come around, I-I've written so many songs about you and I don't even know who you are.'
He'd written songs about you? He liked music, just like you. You could feel your heart start to warm.
'You're starting to get used to me. I can feel you too, if you didn't notice.' Your hand made it's way to your chest, where your heart was resting. You were interrupted by your mother voice and he was gone. Your mum stepped into your room, making sure to knock before entering.
"Tess, can you fix up these groceries?" You nodded and made your way out. As you were fixing everything up, your mum began to speak,
"You haven't been feeling anything weird these past couple of days, have you?" she asks,
"Actually..."
"It's him, you can hear him can't you?" you nodded, "He's near, that's why you can hear him."
"Can he hear me?"
"It depends."
"On?"
"If he's older than you," you looked at her confused, "So, if he's older, his heart has been waiting for you, you would've probably felt an extremely heavy feeling on your chest and the pounding in you heart was loud, because you're heart is catching up with his. But if you're the same age, everything would've happened later on, at the same time."
"Woah..." that was a lot to take in, someone was loving you, you'd never really thought of that ever happening.

The 'symptoms' started to go away but your mum had explained it was completely normal. Though, you could still hear him every couple of days. Today felt so worrying. You were out with your friends, trying to be happy and excited but you felt as if Shawn was feeling worried. You rubbed your chest.'You're probably feeling worried, I know because that's what I'm feeling right now,' There he was, 'Just know I'm fine, I'm just flying to another country, that's all... This is just the longest flight I've been on."
'Another country? Where is this guy from?' you thought,
'It's Australia by the way, if y-you were, y'know... wondering.' it took you a few seconds to realise, 'You're excited? Why are you- You're from Australia? We're so close.' and just like that, he was gone.
"T, are you okay? You seem distracted..." Cearra asks, "Is it Shawn? Did he speak to you again?"
"Yeah, he's coming here..."
"Here? Here where?"
"Australia."
"Did he specifically say which part!?"
"He kinda did the disappearing thing again"
"They all do that don't they?"
"Sebastian too?"
"All the goddamn time, it's getting annoying but apparently, he can hear me now... I mean, it has been more than a month." she explains,
"It took him a month to hear you!? Does that mean-"
"No, I think I've figured out that he's wayyyy older than I am," she laughs, "Yours might happen tomorrow."
"I just need him to hear me."
"I know, B, I know." she said, rubbing your back.
You'd gone home at about four o'clock, sleepy and exhausted. You always over tired yourself like this, always making an effort to pass off that you were A-okay and happy, Cearra was the only one to notice that your mind was wondering off somewhere else. Well, more so, to someone else.
'I wish you could hear me... I'm talking to air but my name is Tess, I'm sixteen, and I think I'm in love with you.' You closed your eyes, sighing.
'I think I love you too, Tess.' Your eyes widen and you gasp.
Oh my god.

A couple of days later, you were once again out with your friends. This time you were happy. He heard you for the first time, he'd finally heard you. You couldn't keep a smile off of your face, if someone didn't know you, they'd probably think you were crazy. Insane, maybe.'Hey, I'm going out for coffee with my friends today, I hope you're doing alright, I lo-' you stopped yourself. You heart began to beat really fast, he heard you.
"Helloooooo, earth to Tessssss!" Laura was clicking her fingers in front of your face,
"Shit, sorry, what's happening?"
"You're holding up a line."
"Oh!" you ordered your drink and sat down with everyone.
After your drinks had arrived, you laughed and discussed everything that was going on. You told them about Shawn and how he was older than you, not as old a Sebastian probably was, Laura says, chipping in for Cearra. We all laughed.
The door of the cafè opens. With the bell ringing from the door and the cold wind flowing through, your heart stops but then begins to pound through your chest, rapidly. Your body reacted almost instantly. You stood up and began searching. You heart was beating faster and faster, as if you were getting closer and closer. You felt like you were about to have a heart attack, but you knew better. Tears were streaming down your face and as if you were magnets, your bodies collided.
"Tess?"
