Chapter Three

My day did not start as a bad day. In fact, it was a perfectly beautiful morning. I awoke to a sunless sky which is beautiful because of its mystery and Calpurnia had cooked my favorite breakfast meal, waffles with whip cream and orange juice. Calpurnia made all of her meals from scratch and that made them ten times tastier. Her from scratch waffles are included in the list of delicious meals made by our Calpurnia. I could not think of a better way to start my day off.

My phone started ringing as I sunk my teeth into the syrup-drenched waffle. I groaned in response, but paced it back on my plate and reached for my phone in my back pocket. My heart did a mini skip when I saw the caller ID.

        “Hi, Toby,” I greeted.

“Hey, I was wondering if you would like to come with me on an adventure today.”

I laughed, “What kind of adventure?”

“The kind to make up for lost years,” he replied, sweetly. I smiled to myself. “You mentioned that you were still friends with Jessie, last night. You can invite her if you want to.”

I mentally cussed myself out for forgetting about Jessie Young. I had stormed out of her house 24 hours ago. I had not called or texted to apologize for my behavior last time. She was probably pissed seeing as she had texted me last night which brought up the Jessie conversation. I did not even read the text.

“Hey, I have to do something really quick but that adventure sounds like fun. Where should I meet you?”

“Uh, I think you can meet me at my apartment. Do you need the directions?” He told me the directions from my house to his

        “Thanks, bye,” I said, quickly.

I hung up and dialed Jessie’s phone number. She did not pick up so I called her again. She still did not pick up until I called her for the fifth time. I was so grateful to hear her voice.

        “Hi,” I greeted, meekly.

“What do you want?” she asked me fiercely.

I was taken aback by her harshness, but reminded myself that I deserved it for treating my friend the way I did. “I just wanted to apologize for the other day. I had no right to be so rude to you. I am so sorry.”

There was silence for a brief minute while my heart sunk to my stomach. “No, I shouldn’t have been in your business so much. He is your husband and you know him better than I do.”

“You had every right to be in my business. I gave you permission when I stepped onto your doorstep like a lost kitten. You were only telling me what you believed. I should not have gotten angry with you for having your own opinion. I’m sorry.”

I could hear her charming laughter in the background. “I forgive you, girly. Besides, lost kitten suits you.” We both laughed like the good friends we were.

“By the way,” I interrupted, “there is so much you need catching up on. You honestly won’t believe how much can happen in a day.” I retold the events that happened yesterday morning.  Every single detail about Toby Martin and his reappearance, I said to Jessie in a matter minutes. I could hear her gasping in the background.

“So he isn’t dead? This means you two could have had a future together. You could be having little Toby and Madeline babies right now. Do you know what this means? You two can finally be together and all of your problems with Jason will be over. You will finally be able to have the happy life you always wanted with the man you always wanted.”
