Chapter 5 - The Stone Laughs

Almost falling flat on my face, I grabbed the handlebar to steady myself. That was a close one. Almost immeditely I lost balance again and this time fell flat on my butt on the ice. I flailed and yelped, trying my best to get up. The song continued on in the background as I slipped and slided around the ice, probably looking and sounding like a seal giving birth. 

Suddenly, laughter echoed through the hall. Loud and slightly mocking, but powerful, like it had been building up for years. I looked up sheepishly, pouting and frowning. He was wheezing, one hand on the bar, one clutching his chest.

 "Oh my god." He exclaimed. "I've never seen a fall so hilarious in my entire life." I laughed along uncomfortably. It was so strange to see his solemn facefull of joy and life, even if it was at my own expense. He didn't even bother to help me up, returning to his cold self almost immediately. Was he this stand-offish with everyone? 

"Well, you're not that old!" I pathetically retorted. He shrugged. "Fifteen years." 

I looked at me phone to realise i'd been gone fifteen minutes. Knowing my parents, I'd better prepare for a full, stern interrogation. I needed to go.
