My smile grows bigger and bigger as we walk through the airport. We just landed in New York and it felt amazing to be back in the states. It was even nice to see the tall buildings. The best part though was seeing the guys' faces. I only saw Maurice's when we flew in since I was sitting beside him but I could see all of theirs as we are walking to the car. Then they are all in awe as we drive to the hotel we're staying at. They truly looked like tourists.
We pull up to the St. Regis hotel and the guys are speechless when we walk into the lobby. It's grand like everything in New York which makes it different from things in England. We get ourselves checked in and make our way up to one of our suites. We make it inside and Barry and Maurice place their guitars into a couple chairs. They would have left them with the rest of the luggage but apparently they had a feeling that told them to bring them up with us. It doesn't take long for all 5 of them to hurry to the window to look at the view the room had.
"This is just amazing," Maurice comments.
I chuckle as I take a seat on a chair beside the window. "Just wait till you see the rest of town."
I get no response but don't mind. My gaze falls onto a painting across the room that looks interesting. As I'm looking at it, I start to click my tongue to make some kind of notice other than breathing. A minute passes before I see Maurice slowly look at me out of the corner of my eye. I turn to look at him, stopping all that I was just doing.
"Everything okay?" I ask.
"Yeah. Keep doing what you were doing."
I look at him weird and decide to go back to looking at the picture and my tongue starts to click again. I see Maurice nudge Barry and Robin and point at me. They whisper some and just watch me. It was actually starting to make me feel uncomfortable. Before I could say something, they are off and running toward the guitars. The instruments are out in seconds and Barry and Maurice begin to strum. I realize then that they had a song idea. I look at Colin and Vince and they realized the same thing. I stand up and the three of us join the brothers, finding a place to sit around them.
The sound they were creating was beautiful but also familiar. It hits me that it was my clicking. They were making something out of the clicking noise I was making. That must be why they were looking at me weird. Once they get the base of the guitar rhythm done, they tell Colin they were thinking of for the drums. He starts doing it on his legs and the guys join in with the guitars. Even though the drum part was just dull leg slaps, the music sounded amazing. I can't imagine what lyrics they will think of for all this.
While we're doing all this, I see the bell boy bring in some of the luggage with Robert Stigwood following behind. The bell boy unloads everything and quickly leaves. Stigwood is left standing by the luggage, lost in the music that was being played.
Once the music was done, he comes back to reality and asks us, "You guys ready for the boat ride?"
Robin, Barry, and Vince jump but soon calm down realizing that it was Stigwood. We all nod our heads and Barry and Maurice put the guitars back in their cases. They don't leave them in the room though; they bring them along with us. I understand why they would do that seeing as they just created an instrumental that was in need of lyrics.
We all pile into a car that was waiting for us and it takes us to a dock that wasn't too far away. We all climb onto the boat that was waiting and we depart from the dock, slowly making our way along the water. I hadn't been around the city like this before so this whole thing is new to me as well as the guys.
"These lights are beautiful," Colin comments as the lights from the buildings start to turn on because of the setting sun.
I nod my head. "Yeah. They're beautiful."
"And the lights all went out in Massachusetts," I hear Maurice mutter.
I wasn't the only one that heard him because I hear Robin say, "Tried to hitch a ride to San Francisco."
I look away from the buildings and find Barry and Maurice hurrying to get the guitars out again. They start strumming and Robin sings, "Feel I'm goin' back to Massachusetts, Something's telling me I must go home. And the lights all went out in Massachusetts. The day I left her standing on her own."
I suddenly realize the guys were writing a song. I quickly pull out my notepad and paper and start writing down the lyrics so the guys could have some idea of what they had created. When I'm ready to write, Barry adds, "Tried to hitch a ride to San Francisco, Gotta do the things I wanna do. And the lights all went out in Massachusetts. They brought me back to see my way with you."
Maurice adds one more verse and they soon quit. They needed a good ending though so I pipe in, "Repeat the 'I will remember Massachusetts' part and maybe make it as a round."
The guys nod and do just that. Somehow they figured out how to do it without really talking about it and I'm in awe. When they finish, all of us on the boat are speechless. None of us thought of them creating a song here and now.
"Guys," I finally get out, "I think this one might be a hit." They hadn't decided on a lot of things yet, like who will sing lead, but I can tell that people are going to like this song.
