Chapter one
The originals
I got the letter three weeks ago. Of course I had no idea what the heck it was. I mean, a letter randomly arrives on your doorstep three weeks before school starts telling you that you've been selected to go to some academy called Academy of originals. I thought it was some sort of joke. Kids at school always pulled pranks on me. They called me jitters. I had ADHD, sue me. Every time I was asked to read they laughed. Ill admit, my seeing wasn't the best! And for some reason I shouted out random words. And of course, random things happened.
Here's what the letter said:
Ms. Lenox Mara,
It has come to the attention of Academy of originals that you have immortal and wizard blood in you. Therefore you have been selected to join the Academy on September 8 this year.
Attached is a list of supplies you should bring aboard the Neptune express
We hope to see you soon. Send this letter back to us by sealing the letter enclosed in the envelope to ensure your coming to fulfill your education. A bus will then come by to pick you up a day before enrollment.
Your superintendent
Ms. Heticate
So yeah. The list of supplies was even worse. A wand 11 inches made of some wood if never heard of. Apparently weapons would be provided. What ever that meant. And a bunch of clothes and text books I didn't know existed.
"Aunt Marie?" I called down the steps. "Yes dear?" She called up. "Do you know about this?" I gave her the letter. I had to live with her ever since my mom died. My dad disappeared since I was 4. I was now 13. She died when I was 6 and ever since then I hoped he'd appear. He never did so I had to live with aunt Marie. I enjoyed it, I guess. She wasn't mean. Accept when I brought up my mom and dad. She told me to stop talking about it and sent me upstairs.
"It's just a letter, ill keep this." She turned into her office. I walked back upstairs.
Now three weeks later, I sat at my desk, doodling on a notebook. "Lenox?" The teacher called. I looked up dazed. "Yeah?" Every one laughed. "What is the answer?" She pointed to the board. I squinted. The letters seemed to fly across the board. "Hey jitters, why don't you use one of you special powers to get the answer?" A boy joked. The whole class erupted. "Shut up!" I called. I squinted at the board again. "I'm sorry, I- I don't know." I leaned back. "12, the square root of 144 is 12." A girl rolled her eyes at me.
The bell rung. I stood up to leave when a cold finger touched my skin. "Ms. Mara? I need to talk to you." She led me to her desk. "Your failing." She sat down. "I'm trying, ma'am, I really am. I just can't see the board that well." I told her. "I don't know what to tell you, I'm doing all I can. You sit at the front with the rarest glasses I could ever imagine and your getting the best tutors!" She said. "I'm sorry." I hung my head.
Then I took to desperate measures. I looked her dead in the eyes and calmed my voice. "Just give me an extra boost in my grade. Trust me, I won't make you regret it." She looked confused for a second then nodded. I felt bad but I was always very persuasive.
She dismissed me and I was met with complete chaos.
Kids ran from the halls. "Run!!! A kid is having a temper tantrum in the gym!!! Come an see this!!" A guy grabbed my hand and pulled me. I let go to go to my next class. I rolled my eyes and walked in. The nerds and me were the only people in the room. "Shouldn't you be in the gym watching the tantrum?" A girl said. "I want to do better in class." I told them. They all giggled.
"Okay class." The teachers voice faded when she saw the loss in students. "Well then. Lets get started on those oral presentations!" She clapped her hands and walked to a list. She searched the room. "Umm.... Lenox! You had the constitution? Describe your document and recite a five sentence quote. Then explain!" She said.
I completely forgot the whole project!! I can't believe this is happening! I stood up. "Well.. Uh.... The constitution is a legal document... Kind of... And-" I started. "You didn't prepare. Tell me now Lenox and I don't give you a complete zero." She looked at me.
I sighed and looked her in the eyes. "Ma'am, I prepared my presentation. I just forgot it at home because I had a surprise this morning and I have been thinking about it. I'm sorry, I'm just trying to do it by memory." I told her. She looked as if she were in thought then nodded. I smiled and attempted to proceed.
The loud speaker crackled. "Lenox mara, I know your in the building, show yourself." A dark voice boomed. Being the nervous wreck I was, my vision blurred and faded to black. I could only hear my self say these words. "Wingardium leviosa." My vision faded back to normal and everyone was floating. "Lenox!! What the heck?" The teacher said. "I-I don't know!" I lowered my hands and they fell to the floor. The door busted open. "Lenox! Show yourself."
I giant ripped through the walls. Not a big bully, a legit giant. He squinted like he couldn't see. "There!" He pointed to me. He charged. "Stop!" I held me hands up and he froze. I looked at my hands. "Wha-" the glass window broke. "Lenox grab on!" A boy with dark messy hair and astonishing brown eyes held out a hand. I grabbed it and he pulled me into a helicopter.
Once the tension died .down he spoke. "Why the hades didn't you send the letter?!" He yelled. "I thought it was a prank!" I yelled back. "Do you not know?- you don't know!" He yelled through the chopping of the helicopter. "I'll explain when we get to the school."
"Does my aunt know where I am?" I said. He nodded.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
We sat there silently until we reached a dock. "This is the way to the school?" I asked him cocking an eyebrow. "Yes, actually." He smiled and whispered to the water. "The water doesn't talk if u we're wondering." I smirked at him. "I know, but it does to a friend of mine." He returned a sly smirk. I cocked an eyebrow again. He laughed. A huge ship rose from the water. I stood there gawking. The Neptune express was plastered on its side. This thing was huge!
I soon realized the boy was standing in the ship. "Are you gonna come on? I'll leave the giants to eat you if you want." I shrugged. "Fine."
I stepped aboard and was sucked next to the boy. "Duck." He grabbed my arm and yanked me down. His hands were warm. Not a nervous warm, his hands were literally like a heater. A ceiling blocked us from light and we descended to the lower deck that hung from the bottom of the ship. "Yea we have the girl.... Yeah we're on our way.... Nooo clearly she got kidnapped my the Minotaur." I looked at him like what? He smiled and held up a finger.
I walked around exploring the tubular room that swam below the surface. "Sorry that was per- I mean a person at the school." He smiled innocently. He really did look cute with his messy hair and scarred face. And burned hands. Must be a tinker. I thought. "What's your name?" I asked. "You don't know? That's surprising you don't know bad boy supreme." He smirked.
I shook my head slowly.
"Mcshizzel man?" He asked.
I shook my head again.
"Wow, I'm surprised you don't no me, why I'm Leo Valdez son of Hephaestus, god of the forge."
