I've never been one for storytelling, or sharing in general, I tell you the tale of my life up until now for one reason, to enlighten you. To bring you into the shadows, because only then, may you truly see the light.
Nothing is true
Everything is permitted.
It was July 2012, a beautiful day. The sun was beaming down onto the small boat that my friends and I were on. Just another weekend of fishing. We all went our separate ways upon joining high-school. However Mark, Dean, Charlie and myself made a pact that we would spend one weekend of each month having some "Bro time", which consisted of either playing xbox, partying or fishing. We were approaching the end of high-school and afterwards we would be travelling to different collages so hanging out would be a challenge. We had spent the morning out on a beautiful river, near the coast of England.
It soon reached 4.30pm and I noticed some rainclouds approaching us. I suggested heading back to shore before we get caught in the wet weather.
"Nah dude relax, we got another hour or so before the rain hits" was Charlie's response.
We caught a couple fish, I'm not sure what types as i didn't fish much but we'd just toss them back into the water afterwards. As we sat in the small vessel talking to one another I felt a cold breeze come over us, I also noticed the sky was getting more gray by the minute. I seemed to be the only one to see it because when I pointed it out to the others they'd just laugh it off.
"Dude it hasn't rained in a month, relax and have some fun" Dean said back, after I reminded them of the impending rain shower. As soon as Dean muttered the words however we all felt a few light drops of rain and a pretty strong gust of wind.
"Alright lads, time to go" Mark blurted. We all got our jackets on as we prepared to head back, the wind had created a current that began to make the little boat sway side to side. We weren't far from the shore, no more than 50 feet or so.
"Oh I 'av a big one hooked lads!" shouted Charlie, who was still sitting on the edge, fishing, with a big smile.
"Ease it off Charlie we're heading back" Mark reminded him.
"She's not lettin' go fellas'! Im reeling her in!" With that Charlie started to reel in the line, he was shaking with glee and a grin twice too big for his face, it was his first time fishing so he was a little over-eager to catch something to be proud of. The rain started beating down heavily now and the winds were beginning to roar into our ears. Charlie was clearly struggling to reel in the catch, his face was slowly turning red from the strain. Mark jumped in to help him along so we could return to shore. Both of them pulled the fishing rod with all there might until *snap* the line gave way and sent the two boys hurdling backwards, almost falling in on the opposite side. The boat suffered a massive sway due to it, almost tipping over, but it was enough to send the only oar we had flying overboard into the water. The current instantly picked it up and began carrying it away, out of reach.
"Fool! Go get it Charlie!" Shouted one of the boys.
"Not a chance mate, I can't swim!" he roared back. However I think it was the coldness of the water that brought on his sudden lack of swimming skills.
I unbuttoned my shirt and threw it down.
"Bloody idiots" I shouted as I lept overboard swimming in the direction of the oar. I tried to convince myself the water wasn't very cold but it was like swimming in ice. I soon caught up to the paddle with the currents help, but when I turned around the boat was further away than expected. I fought hard against the current but it proved extremely difficult, especially with a damn oar in my hand. Anytime I got closer to the boat another swell of water was shoved into my face pushing me back, the swells were getting bigger. The rain was pouring down now and my arms were aching from the cold water. I decided to leave the oar and get back to the boat. Just then a massive current smashed into my face and hurdled me underwater.
By the time I resurfaced I seen one of my friends dive in to help me, but I couldn't make out who due to rain and distance. At this stage I began to lose sight of the shore, then the boat, then my friend. Soon everything became grey and my eyes had so much water in them I couldn't see, my arms were over-worked and burning from exhaustion, I was getting colder and colder, I was getting dragged out to sea. I screamed over and over "HELP!" but I knew nobody would hear me, I got tired and dizzy, then my body surrendered. All it took was one more huge swell to the face to knock me under the surface, everything was black, I began to run out of oxygen and as soon as my mouth opened the ice cold water flushed down into my lungs, freezing me on the inside, I was spinning and spinning down, the last thing I remember was having my head smashed into a rock, then it was over, this was it for me I thought,
Darkness.
