Requested by reddeadwolf77. I had no ideas BTW. Spoilers ahead!
A cool breeze swept through the camp as the sun began to dip behind the horizon, lined by dense forest. Several cats bustled about the clearing, finishing duties of the day as night approached. As the final patrol returned, you watched as most cats headed to their dens, including the medicine cat, Yellowfang.
As the old she-cat crept back into the medicine den, you slunk through the shadows toward the reed patch, which served as a prison of sorts for Brokenstar. Glancing in both directions before stepping out into the open, you made your way over, clearing your throat to announce your presence.
He called your name softly in response, lifting his head from his paws and bringing himself to a sitting position. His voice held a trace of vulnerability so unlike him, and he hated it. You didn't think it suited him.
"Yeah," you whispered, padding up to his side. "Just me."
"Good to see you," he meowed bluntly. "Well, hear you anyway..."
Your gaze lingered on his scarred face, the original colour of his eyes hidden behind torn eyelids. After a moment of slightly awkward silence, that thought came to mind.
"Can I ask you something?"
"I suppose," he meowed lowly, almost in warning, though you knew he meant you no harm.
You were the only one around that made being a prisoner bearable and treated him as an equal. That wasn't something he was accustomed to either, but he decided he preferred it to the other cats that only feared him or treated him like dirt after his injury.
"What colour are your eyes?" you asked, still speaking in hushed tones but now sounding much more innocently curious. "We never met before... you know."
Brokenstar gave a little huff of amusement at your discomfort, though the question had been equally as ridiculous in his mind. You were still hovering near his nest, so he patted the ground with one paw, inviting you to sit.
"Orange," he answered simply. Then he added, "Do they look as bad as they feel?"
"Define bad..." you meowed, avoiding the question. You laughed nervously but relaxed when he responded with another huff of laughter in kind.
There was a moment of silence aside from the nocturnal sounds of the forest as you finally joined him on the ground, curling up close by. He asked about your eyes next, and you felt slightly guilty about not thinking of that sooner. You answered his questions into the night, mostly about yourself.
At some point, you must have drifted off to sleep only to be awakened by the pale light of dawn. Panic shot through you, and you glanced around but only saw reeds. Still, you had to sneak away before any cat got suspicious.
"Are you leaving?" Brokenstar's voice startled you, having assumed he was asleep. "I can't tell when it's light out."
"What, going to miss me all day?" you teased, getting to your paws and stretching.
"I do love the company," he admitted light-heartedly and you purred with laughter under your breath.
"Then it's a good thing I like keeping it."
With that, you darted off through the reeds, running your tail along his flank as you passed.
