Althea
It's such a beautiful day. The sun is shining, no clouds in sight. It's warm but a slight breeze keeps it from getting too hot. It's a beautiful day, but none of that matters. Not today. Not to the family of Elizabeth Avery. Nothing could make this day better for them. Nothing can ever make burying your family better. I'm pulled from my thoughts as the first few cars start to pull up towards the grave. Peeking around the tree I see people dressed in all black start to crowd under the green tent, in the first row of chairs her parents sit holding each other. The blank stares on their faces are haunting.
"Thea?" I jump at the sound of my name. Turning, I see Isaac standing behind me with a confused look on his face.
"Uh...hey?" I say taking a small step back from the tree that I've been hiding behind.
"What are you doing here?" He asks
"I could ask you the same thing." I say, my voice taking on an unexpected defensive tone.
"I work here." He says grinning. "Your turn." I sigh
"I don't really know, I just knew she was being buried today." His face softens a little.
"You haven't been at school since everything happened. Are you okay?" He takes a seat on the grass and looks up at me expectantly. I sigh and sink down beside him, pulling my knees to my chest.
"I don't get it, Isaac. I don't understand what the point is. We get here, we find out that we have these...these gifts...or whatever you want to call them, and then she still dies. We could have saved her, but she still died. It makes no sense to me. Why...I don't know...I guess I've always felt like everything happens for a reason. Like there is some master plan that is set out for each of us, but this...I don't get it." He is quiet for a minute, just staring straight ahead.
"People die."He says quietly. "I don't think it ever makes sense to those of us that are left behind. This town, it's full of death. Powerful things are drawn here. It makes it a pretty dark place to call home, but not all powerful things are evil, not all monsters are bad. You are strong, you have powers that I can't even begin to wrap my head around. I would trust Scott with my life, but that night, on the rooftop, I would have been dead if it wasn't for you and your sister. Scott would have been too late. I know you wish we could have saved Elizabeth, I wish that too, but this isn't your fault. You tried, and that is all that matters." He puts his hand gently on my knee and looks at me, his eyes searching my face, for what I have no idea. "Thea, I didn't get to thank you. You saved me, you and your sister." I am hyper aware of his hand on my leg. His ocean eyes lock with mine. It feels like he can see straight through all of walls that I have built around myself, refusing to let anyone but my sister in. After a minute I realize that I haven't said anything and he has a concerned look on his face.
"Um, I'm glad that we got there in time..." Stupid, I'm so stupid. He grins and leans back, sliding his hand away and leaving me wishing he would come back.
Athena
"Where is your sister?" May asks as she begins to set the table for dinner. Thea has been gone for hours. As if skipping school wasn't enough now she was skipping dinner. May would find out eventually and she would no doubt be pissed.
"Library maybe?" I say hoping to keep her from asking any questions. It's totally a thing she would do. I pull out my phone and send her yet another text telling her to get home. The past few days have been weird. Thea refused to go to school, she said she didn't want to be reminded of what we did or didn't do, I guess that would be a better way of putting it. I've been going, but it's weird not having her there. I don't like having to deal with Scott and his friends alone. They are nice and all but I'm not one of them. Thea and I were fine on our own until we met them, now it's like everything is crazy and I just wish it would go back to normal. A knock on the door pulls me away from my thoughts. I sigh and get up from the couch.
