Christmas Eve - 2013

Christmas. A time of happiness, laughter and giving gifts. A time of being with family and friends, spreading cheer and kisses under the mistletoe. 

For most people.

For everyone except one hedgehog.

Shadow's head hung low as he walked home through the snow. It was Christmas Eve, and he didn't want to spend it alone, but he wasn't sure who would accept. Most people were probably asleep by now, as it was 10 at night. Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Sonic and Sticks were all hanging out together, having a party at Amy's house. He could hear the music not too far away. He shivered, white snowflakes gathering on his quills. Glancing in on Lady Walrus' house, he watched as her children ran around the room laughing as their mother lounged on the couch, telling them to calm down.
"If only she was still alive... Christmas would be much easier for me."
Sighing, Shadow continued towards home, head still lowered. Memories of the young blonde girl who had given up her life 50 years ago, directly into front of him, the one he had failed to save, flooded into his mind. 
"Maria..."
Slamming the door of the cave he had made his home in, he slumped down beside the small fire he kept burning to heat himself up a little. He hadn't even hung up decorations; he couldn't bring himself to, not after what happened.
"Shadow! You in there?" The door shook as a fist rammed into it.
"Go away Sonic. We're enemies, remember?"
"Look, I know you don't wanna come to the party. The whole town's showed up, apart from Lady Walrus. It's just... none of us what you to be alone this year. Just come down, you don't have to stay for long. You might find a new friend, I don't know. Even Egghead's shown up."
"No."
"Come on, Shadow! Live a little bit!"
"You're not taking no as an answer are you?"
"Nope."
"Fine, but only because it's getting you off my back."

Ten minutes later, Shadow had hidden himself away to one side of Amy's house, which was the only place that nobody else was. Sonic and Amy were dancing in the middle of the floor, Tails was playing music, Knuckles was showing off to a group of girls and Sticks was nowhere to be seen. Shadow stayed quiet, back against the wall, hoping the ground would open up and swallow him just so he could get away from this stupid place. He was so absorbed in his thoughts he didn't see a F/C A/T slump beside him.
"Too loud for you too, huh?"
"What?" Shadow turned to her. She took a sip of her Coke and smiled.
"Too loud for you too?"
"Yeah. I don't want to be here."
"Mmhm. Sonic dragged you here?"
"How'd you know?"
"He invited the whole town. People who were too slow getting here he went and collected himself. I was one of them."
Shadow chuckled, "That sounds like the Faker to me."
The girl let out a small giggle herself and fixed her jeans, the straps of her sparkling F/C top sliding off her shoulders slightly.
"You look nice, by the way."
"Oh, thanks," she laughed quietly, "You know, I just realised I haven't seen you in town very much. What's your name?"
"Shadow."
"I'm Y/N."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too."
"Hey, Shadz! I see you met Y/N!"
"Sonic, what have I told you about nicknames?" Shadow groaned. Y/N rolled her eyes.
"Have you been bringing the party atmosphere down, Shadz?"
"Shut up, Sonic. Go mess around with Amy or something."
"Oh come on. We all know what you're like."
Y/N let out a small chuckle, before coughing heavily, "Sonic, I smell alcohol on you. Have you been drinking?"
"Noooo," Sonic slurred. He was definitely drunk.
Shadow sighed, "Sonic, seriously, rest for once. You need it."
"Why the advice Shadz? I thought you said we were enemies."
"Right now we're not enemies. But we're not friends either."
Y/N sighed and carefully moved  so she was pushing Sonic towards Amy, "Go on. Amy can take care of you."
"Ames, baby!"
Y/N laughed as Sonic ran off towards Amy. She took another sip of her drink and leaned back again. Shadow sighed and smiled. This was the best Christmas he had had since his only friend had died.
