Jonathan opened the door late that night, wanting to see her for himself. As Luka had been, he was shocked and horrified at what a day had done to her. He swam to her, hesitating at the fire in her eyes. He pulled her up, and she let him, clearly too broken-spirited to fight him.
“Prue.” He spoke without moving his gaze off the girl.
“Yes, my lord?”
“She was not to be in this condition. Why is she?”
There was a hesitation from the woman. “She was perfectly fine when they recaptured her last night, my lord. But they do say that she hasn’t been eating. It’s almost like she’s pining –”
“Silence.”
Prue fell silent, waiting while he thought. Finally, he spoke again.
“Bring her to my quarters. We shall see if that is better.”
“Yes, my lord. Right away?’
“Of course!” he snapped. “If this is what a day does to her, we don’t want to make it longer. She’s too valuable to lose.”
“Yes, my lord.”
He swept out of the room, knowing that by the time he got to his rooms, Prue would be bringing the girl. Not for the first time, he wondered what had gone through the boy’s mind.
